Hazard and Risk Identification Workshop

The CMPA Conveyor Hazard and Risk Identification Workshop was held on Thursday 19 April at the South Oakleigh Club in Bentleigh East and included a site visit to the Recycling Industries Clayton site for the brainstorming session.

Almost 60 extractive industry employees from around the state attended the Workshop and were broken into five teams focusing on various topics including:

  • Conveyor design
  • Conveyor belts and splicing
  • Conveyor maintenance
  • Conveyor belt tracking
  • Conveyor safety

Thank you to the following Associate Members for their financial support of the event and for the invaluable knowledge and expertise each company was able to provide:

  • Kinder & Co
  • JSG Industrial Systems
  • Metso Minerals
  • Sandvik Mining & Construction
  • Statewide Bearings
  • WAM Australia

Special thanks must go to:

  • Neil Kinder of Kinder & Co who dedicated an enormous amount of time to organising the team leaders and the topic presentations conducted in the morning session
  • Jane Sims of Box Hill Institute of TAFE for being Mast of Ceremonies
  • Recycling Industries for allowing us to visit their site for the brainstorming session
  • Bob Duncan and Ian McLeod of the DPI for presenting and assisting on the day

In a slight variation to the standard Workshop schedule, the Conveyor Workshop morning session consisted of informative and educational presentations on the various team topics.

These presentations are available free of charge on CD. Please contact the CMPA if you would like a copy.

Preparation is now underway for the results from the Conveyor Workshop to be included into the CMPA Occupational Health and Safety Support Sheet developed as a result of the Fixed Plant Workshop held in 2005.

This document will incorporate the hazards, risks and controls identified at the two Workshops in a consolidated publication for use by Members in the identification of hazards and risks and implementation of controls at their own site.

This document will be included with all other CMPA OHS Support Sheets as an appendix in the Reference Manual that accompanies the Work Safely training course.

These documents are also available to all Members free of charge upon request from the Secretariat.
