Box Hill Institute of TAFE Industry Board

On 14 March CMPA Education Chairperson, Tim Bird, attended the Box Hill Institute of TAFE board meeting on behalf of the CMPA.

Tim presented the following issues raised by Members and industry as a whole to ensure the board is effective for all involved including our Members, Box Hill Institute of TAFE and the industry’s students.

In proposing these suggestions, persons must understand that the fundamental issue underpinning this is the importance of industry taking charge of its own destiny on all matters encumbered upon it. (Eg. in terms of training systems).

Role of the Board

The CMPA considers the role of the Board could be to:

  1. Provide direction to resource allocation and assist in ensuring the Institute’s continued position at the forefront of industry education
  2. Confirming that both training and assessment is meeting industry’s expectations and minimum standards
  3. Act as a conduit between the Institute and the industry communicating its expectations and future programs
  4. Provide industry representation in a presentation process for welcoming successful candidates into the industry (above Certificate IV). This is not an issue of issuing the competency or qualification, rather it is to provide a report to the Institute in general terms articulating any weaknesses or issues they have established through the course of the student meetings.

Charter of the Board

The charter needs to highlight that industry always holds the right if, over time, issues remain unresolved to take more decisive action (for instance meeting with the Institute’s senior management through to considering other providers)

The charter needs to include clear definition of the process of selecting new representatives.

It must be formed in a fashion whereby there is a clear process of succession that will enhance the Board’s standing within industry.

Which units are delivered, if block release is used, what training references are used, etc.

We will continue to follow this issue and if a suitable resolution is not reached the CMPA will not participate in this process.

Welding lifting lugs onto manganese

In 2005 the CMPA and Quantec Solutions developed resource materials for the Certificate II unit of competency Perform Basic Cutting and Welding, which is now run on site for Members.

Recently, safety concerns have arisen as a result of incidents relating to lifting lugs, in particular are occurrences where lifting lugs have fallen off.

The high quality of training currently delivered by Quantec Solutions has led the CMPA to join forces again to develop resource materials for a lifting lugs training course.

The support and contribution of Associate Members whose expertise lies in this field would be greatly appreciated by way of reviewing the training materials or providing data.

Industry site visits with a professional photographer have occurred to ensure photos utilised in the resource materials are of the highest standard.

The CMPA and Quantec Solutions look forward to the implementation of the Welding Lifting Lugs onto Manganess course into the suite of CMPA facilitated training.

For further information on this course or to enquire about the Perform Basic Cutting and Welding course please contact the CMPA on 03 5781 0655.
