By on June 28, 2013

RODNEY KRINS, General Manger of Impact Drill and Blast Pty Limited reports on the growth and development of the business.

IMPACT Drill and Blast is a Victorian based quarry and surface mining drill and blast company that started approximately fourteen years ago in response to a requirement for a safe, modern and professionally operated drill and blast service provider.

Impact Drill and Blast has successfully operated in many of the quarry and mine sites across Victoria, Southern NSW and SA, offering a range of quality drilling and blasting services backed by our team of highly experienced personnel.

The company grew from its humble beginnings with two second hand drill rigs to the strength it is today having a fleet of over fifteen drill rigs operating across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales offering its services to the Quarrying and Construction Industries.

The company was bought by the Jeminex Group in April 2007 along with two other drill and blast companies in NSW and QLD. With the additional drill and blast services available from its sister companies, Impact has the ability to draw additional resource’s when required.

With the purchase by Jeminex, Impact was not only able to move into larger, more suitable premises at 31 Industrial Drive, Sunshine West Victoria, but also able to leverage more substantial OHS and environmental backing and documentation

Personally, I have been with the business since 1999, starting with the company as a driller. In 2002, I received a promotion to the Operations Manager. Following this, I was offered the role of General Manager in 2009.

During my time with Impact, I have been able to complete various training including obtaining my Certificate IV as a Trainer and Assessor, Certificate IV in Blast Hole Drilling and Certificate IV in Exploration Drilling.

I am a committee member of the Associates Committee for the CMPA. An associate of the IQA Victoria, also having been a committee member for the past few years and in 2012 saw my involvement with the planning committee for CMIC 2012.

Impact Victoria now has a number of Certificate II, III and IV drillers, a dedicated team of field service tradesman, qualified shotfirers for both quarry/open cut and general/construction blasting across multiple states.

We have a dedicated Sustainability Manager whose role is the Quality, Safety, and Training & Environmental Management Systems for the company and our customers.

The safety of our personnel, and that of our customers, is paramount in all that we do at Impact Drill and Blast. With full documentation including, Environmental Management Plans, Blast Management Plans, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), Take 5 booklets and work procedures, Impact Drill and Blast is positioned to meet all our customer’s needs.

Service and support are the key factors of our business in developing and maintaining our customer-base. Impact Drill and Blast has always strived to offer a best-in-class service, by listening to its customers and offering a service that adds-value to the business chains of all its customers

The laser technology is also available to our customers for the accurate profiling and modelling of stockpile volumes. In addition we have also successfully completed drilling projects in relation to rehabilitation of worked out and completed Quarry sites.

Over the past fourteen years we have serviced and continue to service many different companies including Holcim, Boral Victoria and South Australia, Hanson, Sibelco, Fosterville Gold Mine, and Penrice Soda along with many independent quarry operators such as Judd & Sons Pty Ltd, Evans Quarries, Molens, Goldsmiths and many more. The support of these companies has been integral to the growth and sustainability of our business.

Impact Drill and Blast has been more of a partner than supplier over the 10 years with Holcim in Victoria. They know and understand our requirements not just when it comes to holes in the ground but also regarding safety performance and operational efficiency.

Being Nationally Code Compliant, Impact Drill and Blast has expanded to serve the construction industry, working on major infrastructure and Freeway projects across Victoria and New South Wales and South Australia.

Included in these are:

  • Western Highway re-alignment in Victoria for the John Holland Group. Over the period between mid-February and mid May 2010, Impact Drill and Blast completed 16 blasts involving design, mark-up, drill, shot firing and blast monitoring of over some 5500 blast holes.

TTh is project was competed with zero incidents or LTI’s.

  • The Southern Expressway in SA, currently under construction by the Baulderstone/Abigroup Joint Venture (BAJV) involved the blasting of 300,000 bcm of weathered rock. The average quantity of explosives used in each blast, 23 in total, was 4000kg (supplied by Orica), with 200 – 250 holes at a depth of between 5 – 7m each. Major restrictions in place due to the vibration limits on critical services such as the SA water pipeline Optus tower and residential houses. Due to the close proximity to the existing Expressway, controlling the fly rock was paramount for the safety of not only the general public but the integrity of the existing road structure. It was therefore imperative that we worked closely with representatives to achieve best outcomes within strict guidelines. Blast exclusion zones were implemented, including road closures to prevent potential accidents. The drill and blast sector of this project was competed with zero incidents or LTI’s. BAJV awarded Impact Drill and Blast with a safety award in recognition of the safe practices and procedures used on site.
  • The Regional Rail Link in Victoria currently under construction by the Baulderstone/Leighton Joint Venture has seen Impact complete 13 of the 19 required blasts to date. Confined blast design practices are paramount for each blast as critical services such as gas pipelines, telco infrastructure, roads, houses and a school are located within very close proximity of the alignment in various locations.

To date, no LTI”s have been recorded by Impact on this project.

Impact Drill and Blast has been a member of the CMPA since 2004. We see the value of being a member of the CMPA as twofold.

Firstly, not only do we benefit from the ability to liaise with customers and suppliers, it has the added benefit of being able to draw and have input to the many documents and training material that the CMPA has grown and generated.

Over the past few years, the quality of the material published and supplied by the CMPA has been first class.
