MINE RESCUE COMPETITION

By on July 15, 2004

Recently, Wendy Cook, Competition Administrator, Victorian Mine Rescue Competition, contacted the CMPA in regards to establishing a Mine Rescue Competition for surface quarry and mine operators similar to that presently run for underground operators.

The Underground Mine Rescue Competition is highly regarded throughout the underground mining industry as providing a practical training experience to participants. A surface competition would run along similar line, giving participants experience in emergency rescue, further increase their abilities, and lift the standard of site emergency rescue.

A meeting was held on March 23rd, at which John Mitas, Chief Inspector of Quarries, explained that the underground competition had been very successful for several years, and that the surface working mines and quarries were not catered for.

The objective of the competition is to test and grade emergency response teams on a set of challenging, real-life emergency scenarios specifically designed for the surface operation.

The exercise for the surface competition are to consist of:

  • Fire Fighting
  • First Aid
  • Industrial Rescue
  • Skills

The CMPA have agreed, in principle, to consider being involved in an surface Rescue Competition in November 2005.

The CMPA is looking at sponsoring a team of six from several quarry sites. If you would be interested call the Secretariat.
