Preventing future fatalities

As a result of the number of serious injuries and deaths involving drillers throughout Australia and New Zealand over the past 10 years, the CMPA has instigated the development of a protocol for the management of both contracted and in-house drillers.

The CMPA is seeking participation from all parties involved in the industry that undertake or are involved with drilling.  Phase one is a request for information on current drilling procedures/practices for formulation of a draft document by the CMPA.  Phase two will involve a forum for manufacturers, suppliers, drilling contractors, quarry managers, owners, DPI and others to collectively assess this document and formulate an agreed response.

The CMPA sees this as a vital step in preventing drilling fatalities and injuries and welcomes input from both Members and Non-Members.  If you would like to participate in improving the safety of drilling activities please contact Mark Halliday at the CMPA on (03) 9745 2132.

QM Book not Compulsory

According to the DPI there is no legislative requirement to make entries in the Quarry Managers Book.  It is however highly recommended that this practice continue as a record of work done on site.

OH&S Crack Down

A tough speech delivered by Victorian WorkCover minister Rob Hulls has indicated that some employers’ “procrastination” on OHS “is only delaying the inevitable”.  He indicated in a recent Safety in Action conference in Melbourne that Work Safe “will only get tougher” on employers who appear to feel “mysteriously immune” to their OHS obligations.  Hulls noted that the government would “continue to target trouble industries.”  Hulls pointed out that workplace injuries in Victoria cost employers and the community “in the order of $3 billion” a year.
