SITE VISIT SUCCESS
On the 10th of February, CMPA employees Mark Halliday and Sarah Kerr were taken on a guided tour of the eastern region by regional coordinator, Rob Matthews and understudy Jeff Heywood.
The tour took in 12 of the CMPA’s members with each visit lasting between one to two hours. Highlighting the geographical isolation of some members, the total distance covered was over 800km and the entire day’s work lasted around 15 hours.
The broad cross-section of materials produced by CMPA members was evident with material types ranging from fertilizer sands to sealing aggregates and concrete mixes.
The visits gave members the opportunity to raise any concerns or issues directly with the CMPA, many of which were common throughout the region. The major issues raised by members on the day were, variation in standards during auditing, existence of unregistered pits, and silicosis.
Two members suggested that the CMPA provide on-site assistance prior to audits to highlight areas of key concern.
CMPA members have a unique history, with many businesses being established in the early 1900’s. To help preserve this valuable history, photographs were taken of each site and will be archived along with information about the business. It is hoped that this will help to provide future generations with an insight into an important part of Victoria’s heritage.
An increase in the awareness and understanding of the importance of Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental compliance was observed at each site. This is a positive sign of the work done by the CMPA and the industries willingness to provide a safe working environment.
All members questioned about the CMPA provided positive feedback. It was a common feeling that the CMPA was doing, as one member said, “a good job at providing unified representation and support.”
The visits form part of the CMPA’s overall commitment to members and provides an excellent forum for face to face interaction. Further visits will be occurring throughout the year, with the CMPA aiming to visit at least one of the Work Authority sites of every member.
