Safety of Machinery

The design, manufacture and installation of machinery have an impact on the safety of users. By eliminating OHS hazards during the design process, the result may be safer workplaces and a reduction in the incidence of occupational diseases, injury and fatality and the associated costs.

NOHSC—Statistics on the consequence of failure to design safely

  • Fatalities involving the use of fixed plant and equipment showed that there were 233 deaths in 225 incidents involving machinery or fixed plant
  • Of the 225 incidents, 177 (52%) had at least one design factor contributing to the fatal outcome
  • Design factors relating to guarding were the most common single design problem identified, followed by the design of controls

Standards Australia has completely revised Part 1 of the AS 4024, Safeguarding of machinery series to bring you an expanded collection of safety and design Standards to help reduce the risk to those working with or near machinery.

This series provides designers, manufacturers, suppliers, employers and users of machinery with the latest vital guidelines to help control machinery risks.

OHS Support in Quarries – Dust Management

The CMPA is currently finalising the Dust Management Guidelines following significant redrafting with Members, others in the industry and consultation with WorkCover and the Department of Primary Industries.

These guidelines provides useful information that is easy to apply and aims to increase the ability of sites to address this issue.

The Dust Management Guidelines will be available to Members at the CMPA General Meeting on 30 March and following this by contacting the
CMPA Secretariat on 03 5781 0655.

Other OHS Support Documents available from the Secretariat include:

  • Drilling & Blasting
  • Mobile Plant Operations
  • Fixed Plant Operations
  • Guarding
