Super Lining for Concrete Plant

“A problem shared is a problem solved” was the welcome outcome for a construction aggregate materials site in Victoria’s south-east. Here the site utilises a huge wok style apparatus to mix the aggregate and sand into a premixed concrete preparation, making it ready for transit in mixer trucks. The wok would experience significant constant abrasion with the movement and impact volume of the dropped premix. It meant the maintenance of the wok was time consuming and costly in relation to the installation of replacement lining products to protect the Wok structure, as well as labour and plant shutdowns.

Recognising the problem itself goes halfway to solving it. At first the site was supplied with several modular style, ceramic sheets that were flexible enough to line the challenging steep internal angles of the curved chute wall surface. These sheets required only an adhesive bond which appeared to be ideal for the cramped space inside the wok. However due the narrow and concentrated area of impact by the various premix materials, very soon the tiles became broken or dislodged. The cause of the failure was not the hardness of the ceramic tiles, but it was the strength of the bond as the impact pressure made the tile’s adhesive backing surface buckle.

As a relatively quick alternative, the site installed a high quality rubber lining product. It wasn’t long after this rubber was installed when even higher levels of erosion and significant wear damage
was evidenced.

Kinder & Co were called to site for their first inspection of the problem. A strong and more elastic urethane wear liner was specified by Kinder to deal with the tough conditions inside the wok. Solid sheets of G83 durometer K-Superline Polyurethane Lining System were water cut to precise measurements in order create a pattern of 8 separate liners, each with duplicate locations for the same G83 formula urethane coated bolt-on installation mechanism.

The reason behind the careful duplication of the bolts is so that in time, when any specific areas of a single sheet of K-Superline shows signs of abrasion, it can be changed out quickly, then manoeuvred and swapped for any of the other same size but less worn sheets of K-Superline – in essence, achieving 100% usage of the lining sheets in any area within the wok. K-Superline’s bolton mechanism will not dislodge and is much more capable of surviving the impact of the premix. Plus all future replacement lining will not require any welding equipment – a feature which the site maintenance team was delighted with as it prevents any potential safety hazards.

Five months on, and the site is very happy to report that no signs of abrasion have been experienced whatsoever. Also, not only does K-Superline G83 provide longer lasting antiwear protection, but reduced material hang-up has also been achieved due to the lining’s unique proprietary low-coefficient of friction.
