GAVIN MOREIRA, Members Services Manager for the CMPA provides a report on the latest incidents reported to Worksafe Victoria.

THE latest Earth Resources Tripartite Safety Forum was held at Worksafe in Melbourne on 19 February 2015. The following information relating to incidents in quarries was presented.

Visits to quarries 1 July 2014 to 31 January 2015

There were 200 visits conducted (including dangerous goods visits), of these visits 66 Notices were issued. Traffic Management / Site Security and Plant Guarding still require the most improvement notices.

A break up of the Improvement notices by type for July 2014 to January 2015 can be viewed by the pie chart below:

Others* comprises Falls from Height, Storage Facility, House Keeping, Noise and Exposure to dust.

The CMPA Guarding Guideline which has been developed, together with the CMPA Work Safely Reference Manual, aims to support Members in meeting the requirements of the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. In doing so, the document demonstrates a process which can be used to establish and successfully implement plant and equipment guarding specific to site requirements.

The publication has been sent to all CMPA Members. Additional copies are available from the Secretariat ($10 Members and $20 Non-Members).

The CMPA is currently working on a Traffic Management Guideline and a guide to working at safe distances from quarry faces. An updated version of the Blast Management Plan Template will also be completed soon.
