Cowwarr Quarries

GRAHAM MCKAY, Director for Cowwarr Quarries provides a report on the development and growth of the site.

Cowwarr Quarries was started eight years ago as a Greenfield site on land owned by a family member, who was also a Director of the Company. Setting up the site and getting a work plan together to reduce time spent on future variations was the key to getting the quarry moving quickly. We could see the potential of the resources we had below us in a few small excavations of the land.

The quarry has steadily grown in the eight years of operation. Starting off slow with small machinery to expanding as we could afford to when the demand increased for the product. A Scrubber Barrel was purchased a couple of years ago with the demand increasing on the white stone.

A local grass fire caused a few issues when it entered the quarry and burnt out 75% of the trees we had planted in line with our Work Authority. If not for the help of the local farmers, a few helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, we would have lost a lot more.

We have a clay based quartz gravel product which we supply to two local shires with road making gravel. Being in a very strong dairy farming area, we supply many of the locals with a screened laneway material. This product seems to ease the illness of the lane cows with soft hooves in the winter months. We also supply a Type A and a Class 4 gravel to Vic Roads contractors on the Princess Highway duplication in our area.

Other products we supply include a washed Quartz Garden Stone, a 10mm and 14mm minus washed Quartz Pebble for the decorative concrete market.

The equipment and plant used on site for our various operations include:

Sandwich 2 deck Screen, Terex Pegson Cone Crusher, Cat 972H Loader, Liugong Loader, Komatsu PC400 Excavator, Scrubber Barrel and a 3 deck fixed screen over concrete bins and three Truck and Trailer combinations.

We have been a member of the CMPA since May 2009 and we thank them for their support, advice and prompt actions. Their support has been invaluable.

Looking to the future beyond 2016 we would like to expand the business into new products and customer base and expand the supply of the white Quartz product to the decorative concrete market and the garden supply trades.
