DPI Update (Issue 54)

JOHN MITAS, General Manager Minerals and Extractive Operations reports on the Mineral and Extractive Industries Stakeholder Information Days.

IN October 2010, DPI hosted five regional information days throughout Victoria -in Melbourne, Bendigo, Ballarat, Traralgon and Benalla. This is the third year that DPI has hosted the information days targeted at industry and other minerals and extractive industry stakeholders.

The sessions included a range of information surrounding recent regulatory and policy developments in the earth resources sector.

Participants had an opportunity to learn about changes to legislation with an update on the stage 1 amendments to the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act and an overview of the newly enacted Traditional Owners Sett lement Act, new regulatory requirements such as the Guidance Note on Reportable Events for Mining and Extractive Operations and guidance material developed during the past year including the Geotechnical Guideline for Victorian Mines and Quarries, Extractive Industry Work Plan Guideline, Code of Practice for Small Quarries and guidelines for the Establishment and Management of Rehabilitation Bonds.

Over lunch, participants were also able to network with government representatives from DPI, Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and AAV.

Overall, the sessions were a great success with over 200 people, from industry, government and local council in attendance. Some of the feedback received included:

  • ‘Variety of personnel across mining and extractive industries -not just mining. Good discussions’.
  • ‘Practical, informative, was very interesting!’.
  • ‘Opportunity to network with industry and government representatives. Relaxed atmosphere with questions encouraged. Was really excellent.’

Provided there is continued interest this year, it is likely that these stakeholder information days will run again. We look forward to seeing you then.
