Educating High School Students

The CMPA is presently working with a number of other related industries to develop a pre-employment program that can be undertaken by high school students.

This should be able to give them an understanding and appreciation of the works those in this and related industries undertake on a daily basis.

To ensure that this is a success, we need to know what sort of jobs you would employ a high school leaver to do. That is would you want them operating a dump truck under supervision? Would you let them clean up around the plant? What jobs in the weighbridge area would you have them undertake?

It is important that members inform us of the sort of jobs they see available as we need to promote this both to the state government and school leavers.

Welding Lifting Lugs onto Manganese

The pilot course for the Welding to Manganese unit will be held shortly.

The Welding to Manganese training course will cover two major areas:

  • Arc Welding – Over three sections (safety, equipment and conduct) you will have the knowledge to undertake the test for AS1554, Part 1
  • Welding Lifting Lugs – This will build upon your skills in arc welding, especially considering the situation of welding onto manganese at a construction materials site. For instance, onto concaves, mantles and jaw faces.

Concurrently works are going into establishing ways by which the task as a whole can be removed—this part of the project will be a 5 to 10 year project.
