Peninsula Quarries

CHRIS DEFREITAS, Development Manager for Peninsula Quarries reports on the development of the quarry.

Peninsula Quarries VIC are the new guys on the block. Peninsula Quarries was established by Bayport in July 2017 as a direct response to the growth and development of its quarry site in Somerville.

The quarry site is located in Pottery Road, Somerville and has been owned by Bayport since 1995. Until recent times, extraction from the site had been undertaken on a campaign basis, however current demand in the region has seen this quarry grow into a full time operation, with five full time staff now based on site.

Whilst the quarry itself is still in its infancy stages, the site has well and truly matured since quarrying commenced in the 1950’s. The site was originally identified, and used to produce pottery and clay based products until the early 90’s. With the introduction of PVC and synthetics during that period the requirement for the clay and pottery based material dissipated and the business was acquired by Bayport.

Peninsula Quarries aims to complement industry needs in the South East Region of Melbourne and fill the void of quality materials which is being experienced by the market place. The site geology comprises sand and sandy clays underlain by Tertiary Age Baxter Sandstone. The quarry pit currently provides and has access to structural fill, clay liner, classified Type A and Type B fill and rock rubble.

In the very near future it is anticipated the site will also be capable of supplying class 3 and 4 crushed rock, aggregates, decorative stones and a wide arrange of landscape products.

The site has recently established the Peninsula Quarries Community Engagement Group (PQCEG). Peninsula Quarries Vic was recently delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Rob Gerrand, BA, FAMI, FAICD, as the inaugural chair of the PQCEG.

The purpose of the PQCEG is to assist Peninsula Quarries Vic to consult with the local community, consider issues raised by members of the community about Peninsula Quarries’ operations, and administer the community grants program which has been setup.

Over the last six months, and through the hard work of Chris DeFreitas, General Manager at Peninsula Quarries Vic, word has quickly spread and the site has become a new viable alternative to projects throughout the South-East Region.

The site has undergone significant investment of late, a new front office has been established, our CAT950M has been fitted with electronic scales and with the installation of our new weighbridge in January 2018 ensuring accuracy and efficiency of outgoing products especially when our sales volume increases.

If you have any upcoming requirements we invite you to contact us at Peninsula Quarries and discuss your project with our experienced team.

Peninsula Quarries joined the CMPA in 2017 and we are grateful for the support, education and networking opportunities that the association has provided us.

We look forward to working with you all in 2018.
