INDUSTRY ALTERNATIVES TO THE QUARRY MANAGERS ADVISORY PANEL

The CMPA will take the following steps to assist sites in ensuring that they have a competent person on their quarry site:

1. Work with the DPI to develop a clear set of requirements that a person should hold in order to be deemed competent by a business’
   owner.
2. Re-release the Site Management Classifications for the extractive industries as developed by the CMPA over the last few years (below)
3. Work jointly with the DPI and industry RTO’s to ensure that the resource materials that are provided are of a high quality and establish a nonofficial assessment panel for those completing training.

Members of the CMPA will not be directed to take a particular road to ensure that they have a competent person on site as it is their freedom of choice to select the method that suits their own business.

PUBLICATIONS NEWLY RELEASED

The Secretariat has released a number of publications to print over the past two months, with the following to be made available shortly:

• Mobile Plant Pre Start and End Day Safety Checklist (Reprint)
• Working Safely with Quarry Products
• Better Purchasing Guide
• Basic Cutting and Welding Reference Manual
• OHS Support in Quarries for ‘Hazards in Mobile Plant’, and ‘Hazards in Fixed Plant’

CRYSTALLINE SILICA

This issue has been brought to the attention of Government with a Senate Committee being established to conduct an “inquiry into workplace exposure to toxic dusts”. The CMPA has resolved to work with the Australian Industry Group on this issue to ensure that the best possible response is put to the Federal Government on this matter.

SUBMISSIONS

As in any period, a number of submissions have been presented to various bodies. A summary of the major submissions can be found in this issue.

Additional submissions included:

• VEAC investigation into the Red Gum forests and the land management of that area. Key points by the CMPA included the need to maintain the right to explore and extract earth resources, the treatment of buffer zones and the issue of Crown Land licence fees on Work Authority sites.
• Draft industry standard for recycled construction and demolition materials. The CMPA’s main contention was the fact that this issue should be managed at the source of the waste rather than by the end users.

CMPA BUDGET 2005-06

The new budget will again see considerable monies being put towards training in Certificate II. It will also see a number of new projects being investigated with the intent of bettering your value for membership. Finally, it will also see a push for new Members who can add a new degree of depth to the Association.

TRAINING UPDATE

The last two months has seen the number of people attending training drop significantly in some regions, whilst others are showing considerable interest. It is with this in mind, that the following is stressed:

1. All Members would have received the new Training Calendar with their membership forms. If it has gone missing or additional copies are required, please contact the Secretariat.
2. Courses that do not have at least 8 people, five working days prior to the course, will not run.
3. If you would like a course on or near to your site and can guarantee at least 8 attendees, the CMPA can arrange a course within one month.

Remember, training makes you and your staff safer and more efficient.
