Service & Maintenance – Fixed Plant Workshop
GAVIN MOREIRA, Member Services Manager for CMPA provides an update on the Service & Maintenance Workshop held in Sunshine West.
On 10th November 2022, the CMPA held a workshop to provide operators with an understanding of how to properly maintain components of their fixed plant to ensure they are running to the best of their ability.
The workshop was held at William Adams, Sunshine West with three interactive presentations.
First up was David Camilleri from AVWELD / Aloys International who provided an insight into repairs and life extension to high wearing equipment and welding and patch repair consumables. Morning tea provided by William Adams followed which allowed the thirty attendees to network.
Next up was Scott Dale from HMA Flow & Industrial who provided a presentation on maintenance of drive systems including gear boxes, belt drives and electric motors. He gave us a good understanding of how to extend the life of your components.
Mark Thompson from Oli Vibrators followed with an upbeat presentation on how to maintain your vibrators and keep them in good order. The importance of choosing the right one for the job as well is ensuring weight settings, greasing, electricals are all right to ensure continuance of productivity and less downtime.
The final presentation before lunch was by Darren Toth of ToThink Engineering who talked about the maintaining and preserving of your vibrating screens. Looking at the different components (bearings, counterweights, drive systems, screen box and support springs) will ensure your screen performance is sound.
Lunch was provided by AVWELD, so we all jumped on a minibus and headed to their premises. Another opportunity for attendees to network with each other as well as the staff from AVWELD and Alloys International. After lunch, tours were conducted of the AVWELD factory looking at the various machines and robot bays that are used to manufacture and maintain various components across multiple industries.
Once the tours were complete, we got back on the minibus and headed back to William Adams where the final presentation was conducted by Adam Blackwood (William Adams) on Contamination Control.
The importance of having a clean and safe workshop cannot be underestimated when it comes to ensuring your working capital (heavy machinery) is in full working order.
“The effects of contamination often lead to component failure. In fact, experts estimate that 75 – 85% of component failures are due to particle contamination. This illustrates that most failures are not due to manufacturing or material flaws, but contamination does magnify manufacturing and material shortcomings.”
The day was completed with a tour of the William Adams workshop and an opportunity for operators to inspect brand new CAT machines.
Thanks again to all the presenters / sponsors throughout the day, to AVWELD for providing the space for and providing lunch and a factory site tour and to William Adams for providing morning tea, a room for the workshop and a site tour.
