• EPA Financial Assurances site visit debrief was held via, MS Teams, with E. Gibson, CMPA Members, and a representative from Boral in attendance
• DJPR Laura Helm met with E. Gibson via MS Teams to discuss Better Approvals for Regulators project and the proposed Code of Practice for small to medium quarries.

Management Committee meeting

CMPA Management Committee Meeting
The CMPA Management Committee Meeting 4-2022 was held via MS Teams at 1:00 pm Wednesday 26 October 2022. In attendance were Jason Comben (Chair), Cameron Black, Tim Bird, David McKelvie, and Garry Cranny. Apologies were received from Jason Rudge, John Pititto, Ashley Day, Andrew Burdett, Craig Banthorpe, and Drew Phillips (deputy Chair). The Minutes from the previous Meeting 3-2022 were accepted in addition to the Financial Report to 30 September 2022 which gave a net profit $165K against a budget of $144K (up $21K). A motion was passed that there will be two complimentary tickets for 2023 Annual Dinner for each Voting member. Members will need to RSVP who will be attending the Annual Dinner (non-transferable) and be paid up Members for 2023/24 by 31 July 2023.
In General Business the following items were discussed:
• EPA Financial Assurances and construction and demolition waste recycling progress to date;
• CMPA Rehabilitation Project Report and the difficulty in having ERR give consideration to the recommendations without prejudice.
• Safety update:
 WorkSafe has charged the employer of a Craigieburn man who died in a forklift accident last year with manslaughter.
 WorkSafe are looking at the following areas: mobile equipment, traffic management and dust.
 Silica dust issues online are increasing and potentially preventing people from entering the industry. Job ads going forward should have a health warning.
 Low frequency noise has been raised as an issue by EPA in VCAT hearing.
• Work Authority applications update.
The meeting closed at 3:30 pm.

Annual Dinner 2023

The CMPA AGM and Dinner is heading back to Melbourne for the first time since 2016. To be held at the mighty MCG and it’s shaping up as another spectacular event and one not to be missed.

Arrangements and bookings are presently being made for the evening’s entertainment and for dinner. Saturday afternoon activities are being considered to take advantage of this spectacular venue and all it has to offer.

Revamped Sponsorship opportunities have commenced with Associates and Voting Members moving quickly and are already committing to the event. Remember, this is an exceptional opportunity to promote your business, support your fellow CMPA members and network in a hassle-free atmosphere.

With only eight months to go it’s very important to book your weekend away early and avoid missing out on the accommodation of your choice. There are three main accommodation places within walking distance Pullman on the Park, Mantra on Jolimont and Quest apartments.

Associates Committee meeting

On 23rd November 2022, the CMPA Associate Committee held its final meeting for the year a face to face in Tullamarine hosted by Amsted Global.

An update was provided on the Annual Dinner which will be held at the mighty MCG in 2023. A venture back into Melbourne for the first time since 2016.

The growth of Sand & Stone was discussed with the growing interest by Members to advertise increasing the size of the magazine. There will be a focus on staff and employees of member businesses going forward with job opportunities a key topic. A reminder that articles are free and are a benefit to being a Member of the CMPA. A good way to promote and grow your business and tell members about your business.

This will not only help keep the content interesting for all readers but publicly advertise your business. An integral part of being a member of an association is to be able to communicate to other members what you are all about and what you can offer to help grow each other’s businesses. Successful businesses can only benefit the industry in the long run.

The CMPA online presence continues to grow both on the website and our social media sites Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, all are pivotal tools to increase brand awareness. We are currently looking at all our communications with members, potential members and the local communities in particular digital marketing to see where we can improve. A review of the website is currently being undertaken too not only update it but to make it more user friendly.

Provision of Information for Job Applicants

The OHS Amendment (Crystalline Silica) Regulations 2021 requires employers or self-employed persons to provide information to any job applicant who will be engaged in or exposed to High Risk Crystalline Silica Work in regards to the health risks associated with exposure to crystalline silica dust and the need for and details of measures to control those risks.

Workers engaged in what Work Safe Victoria deems High Risk Crystalline Silica Work are potentially exposed to Respirable Crystalline Silica Dust (RCSD).

Ongoing exposure to RCSD at levels above Safe Work Australia’s Workplace Exposure Standard can lead to respiratory disease.

Controls have been established and implemented in alignment with the Victoria’s OHS Regulation 98 Control of Risk to either eliminate or reduce the risk associated with exposure to RCSD as far as is reasonably practicable.

These controls are listed on our Crystalline Silica Hazard Control Statement.

Details of these controls, your, and our roles and responsibilities in ensuring they are effective and maintained will be communicated to applicants during the job interview.

Successful applicants shall:
• Be instructed in the application of our Crystalline Silica Hazard Control Statement;
• Be required to acknowledge and commit to the application of our Crystalline Silica
Hazard Control Statement;
• Undertake a workplace induction on commencement of employment that explains these roles and responsibilities in more detail, and;
• Undertake RCSD Awareness and Control training on a routine basis.

Failure to comply with our Crystalline Silica Hazard Control Statement may result in immediate termination of employment.
