BOX IRON-BARK FOREST BILL
The government has recently seen this bill through parliament and the CMPA has used every endeavour to ensure the legislation does not unduly impact on the extractive industries operations within park boundaries.
The association remains concerned that the extractive industry data being used in the initial study was grossly distorted and that the inclusion of buffer zones in new national parks further sterilised known valuable industry resources.
The CMPA was keen to impress upon both the government and opposition that equal attention be paid to financial and environmental considerations in initial investigations.
The Box Ironbark Implementation panel noted that the CMPA submission was “one of the more considered submissions to the panel”. However, the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council interpreted issues differently noting the “CMPA’s call for unused reserves to be retained for future generations as stone reserves is effectively a wish for things to remain as they were in 1880. There have been huge changes in technology and the community’s requirements since then.”
The interpretation of the submission was a good example of the politics behind issues and the pressures different lobby groups and advisers can bring to bear.
Below is a list supplied by the DNRE showing the WA’s that they know will be effected by the Bill. If you believe that you will be effected by the implementation of this bill and your name is not listed please inform the CMPA as soon as possible.
The CMPA intends to assist those effected by ensuring that they are properly represented when applying for compensation.
List of those to be effected by the BIB Bill
This list was requested of the DNRE by the CMPA. Two CMPA members not on this list have already come forward and nominated that they will be effected . This indicates that there could well be others! Ensure that you check this list as the DNRE believes it is accurate.
