Monash University Research Team Visits CMPA Work Safely Training

Earlier this year Box Hill Institute was approached by Monash University to participate in a Research Project which was interested in conducting a study across a range of industries including the Extracive Industry.

Box Hill Institute was asked to nominate a regional workplace training program as a case study. In collaboration with the CMPA, the ‘Work Safely Program’, which is in its third year of implementation, was selected. A program conducted in the Bendigo region was chosen.

Of particular interest to the Monash Research team under the direction of Associate Professor, Ilana Snyder, was the profile of the participants. This included such aspects as the range of ages, particular work roles and their experience with technology both in the Extractive Industry and with their home and family lifestyle.

Monash visited the group on two occasions and the confidential data sourced has contributed greatly to the research findings. The final report by the National Council of Vocational Education Research (NCVER) will be presented at Griffith University, Queensland in December.

The Monash Research team were particularly impressed with the innovative nature of the CMPA training programs and the arrangements in place for the accessibility for regional Extractive Industry employees.

Explosive Licence Renewal Courses—2005

Just a reminder that as of 1st of July some older licences under:

  • Mines Act 1958
  • Mineral Resources Development Act 1990
  • Extractive Industries Development Act 1955

will expire.

If you wish to continue using your licence once the new legislation comes into force you must have completed a renewal course prior to that date, as all old licences will become invalid.

The course details for the first of the 2005 courses are as follows:
Date: Friday 25th February

OTTE Audit of Extractive RTO’s

Engineering Skills Training Board (Vic) Inc – Extractive/Mining/Drilling Reference Group Meeting:

P. Canavan advised that a meeting had been held between OTTE, ESTB and CMPA representatives to discuss the audit progress.

OTTE has now agreed to undertake a “strategic” audit of all Extractive RTOs. Jim Turner advised that the auditors are looking closely at training and assessment resources and questioning how they are validated by the industry.

P. Canavan advised that RTOs, when seeking accreditation to deliver a qualification, need to demonstrate to OTTE appointed Training Recognition Consultants (TRCs) that they have appropriate training and assessment material. The CMPA, in conjunction with the ESTB, is exploring avenues to inform TRCs about what is acceptable in the industry.

CMPA Events Calendar

The CMPA is proud to release its first ever “Events Calendar” to Members. The brochure encompasses both information and a schedule of all meetings, education/training sessions, and workshops being conducted by the CMPA over the next 6 months.

You should have received a free copy of this calendar in the mail within the last week or so. If you have missed out, or for further copies of the calendar, bookings and enquires, please contact the CMPA Secretariat on (03) 9745 2132.

Tyre Fitting Workshop

Peter Power, Department of Natural Resources and Mines

A one-day Tyre Fitter’s workshop was held in Townsville on 2 September, 2004. Participants were invited from the majority of mining operations in Queensland where 57 and 63-inch rims are in use. The make up of the participants included tyre fitters (serviceman) and their manager/supervisor from coal and metalliferous mining sites, tyre manufacturers representatives from Bridgestone and Goodyear, rim repairers/manufacturers from Rimex and Wheels and Rim, a Mine Operator and representatives from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines.

The workshop’s short term goals were to identify any current and emerging issues with regards to tyre fitting of very large heavy earth mover tyres by involving and consulting with experienced personnel from the mining industry, and if time permitted to consider and discuss solutions.

The long term goals of the workshop were to:

  • Distribute minutes to participants for comment.
  • Distribute ratified minutes to all of the mining industry and other bodies.
  • Tyre fitters and managers to conduct risk assessments where appropriate on any identified issues, not already effectively dealt with, upon returning to their sites and receiving this information.
  • NRM to approach manufacturers and industry with identified issues and where required seek engineering solutions.
  • To provide feedback where appropriate to the Australian Standards Committee with recommendations for changes to AS4457.

The specific areas of discussion at the workshop included:

  • Tyre inflation pressure during removal and fitting. What do site procedures recommend, and are they practical.
  • Tyre manipulation equipment problems. Current equipment has difficulties in manipulating large tyres at low pressures.
  • Removal of tapered mounted rims from large haul fleet equipment. What are the difficulties for tyre fitters?
  • 5 and 7 piece rims, are there any problems?
  • Any other issues identified by tyre fitters?

There are four distinctive areas, in which the majority of the issues can be captured, with some overlap. These include:

  • Tyre handling equipment.
  • The practicality of some of the requirements of AS4457.
  • Wheel and Rim serviceability standards.
  • Training competencies for tyre servicemen.

Work Safely Training

Become involved in what has proven to be an extremely successful course.

All successful participants receive certification for the “Work Safely Competency” in Certificate II – Quarry Management from the Nationally endorsed Extractive Industry Training Package.

Would you be confident that your efforts to train your employees/yourself in OH&S could stand up in court?

Ask yourself these two simple questions:

  1. Was the person conducting the training from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?
  2. Was the training accredited by a nationally endorsed training organisation such as ANTA?

If you answered ‘NO’ to either of these questions, you may want to consider doing this course!
