What’s News? (Issue 30)
New CMPA Website Online!
After months of hard work by both Briony and the developers, the new website has been posted.
Upgrades and changes include:
- Full Associate details and links
- Details on training courses and past Education Newsletters
- A ‘Members Only’ area
- CMPA Submissions (Members)
- Web versions of past issues of CMPA News (Members)
- Sample procedure documents (Members)
By now, Members should have their password. If not, please call Briony.
NOTE: View the web versions of the newsletter in the Members Only section of the website for further information on articles published in the CMPA News.
Christmas Break
The CMPA office will close on Thursday 21 December and reopen on Monday 8 January. We wish all of our Members a safe and Merry Christmas and New Year and we will be in touch again in 2007.
CMPA Treasurer
The Management Committee recently selected Robin Hocking to be the Association’s Treasurer. We are also reviewing our procedures, accountants and auditors at the present time.
Medical Assessment Templates
The standardised assessment documents are available for trial. Please contact Sarah if you would like to trial them.
Red Tape Investigation
Those Members who responded to the recent CMPA survey are thanked for their efforts.
Members are finding the application for a new Work Authority or a variation to be both frustrating and time consuming as a whole, with many reporting severe delays associated with native vegetation.
If you have not yet completed the survey, but would like to please send it back, or call Sarah to have an informal chat.
Crushing and Screening Manuals
Although far behind the expected delivery date, the units are progressing with the first, Conduct Crushing Operations, being prepared for a pilot course.
The second, Conduct Screening Operations, is also progressing with an official draft expected before the Christmas break.
We do however need Members assistance! If you have any of the photos listed in the previous edition please get them through to Sarah by early January.
If you would like to review the Screening Manual we would also love to hear from you.
British Aggregates Association
On Ron’s recent overseas trip, he met with the management of the BAA, the equivalent of the CMPA in the United Kingdom.
It was quickly established that the quarry owners in the UK were suffering from similar issues to ours (including how to decide if a quarry manager is competent).
We have since started a consistent line of communication with the BAA. If you are traveling to the UK and would like to check out some of the quarries over there, let us know and we’ll put you in touch!
Below are two websites from the UK that you might find of value:

Associates & General Information Reference Manual and Notepads
All Members should have now received their free copy of the 2006 Associates & General Information Reference Manual.
The format of this year’s manual has been updated to a ring bound book and has also seen the development of the Preferred Suppliers Notebook which accompanied the manual.
The upgrade in format and introduction of the pocket guide are thanks to the financial contribution of numerous Associate Members who’s support has enabled the publications to be available free of charge.
VLPA Update
The Victorian Limestone Producers Association’s Code of Conduct for lime was instituted early in 2006 following consultation with the State Chemical Laboratories and other relevant areas of the Department of Primary Industries.
The development of the Code of Conduct was driven by the sun setting of Victoria’s previous Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) (Fertilisers) Regulations.
The Code of Conduct and the new Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) (Fertilisers) Regulations 2005 cover the declaration of heavy metals if above certain limits and the standard product labeling consisting of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate content, neutralizing value, sizing and moisture.
The VLPA Executives would like to wish all of their Members and their families, along with our friends at the CMPA, a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.
Further information on the Victorian Limestone Producers Association can be obtained by visiting the VLPA website www.vlpa.asn.au
