VLPA Update (Issue 40)

By on August 13, 2008

October 15 will see VLPA Members gather for the Annual General Meeting in Geelong. PETER MCCLUSKEY from VLPA reports.

THE AGM/Conference will be held at the Mercure in Geelong on Thursday 16 October, 10am for 10:30am start.

We hope to see as many Members as possible attend as there are some interesting topics listed. They include a DPI weather watch expert who was very popular last year, progress on regulatory matters i.e. Native Vegetation Framework affecting expansion of operations, amalgamation of Acts, Code(s) of Conduct as well as the range of issues generated through our website.

Our thanks to the McCann family of Geelong Lime and Komatsu Australia for sponsorship of the day.

AMALGAMATION OF ACTS CONTINUES

The Victorian Government has indicated its intention to amalgamate the Extractive Industries Development Act with the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act. To this end the government via DPI has established an Extractive Industries Workshop to provide a forum for industry associations to address transitional issues and other areas of concern arising from the proposed amalgamation of Acts.

VLPA is represented on the Workshop along with CMPA & CCAA. Meetings are continuing and discussion has centred on the planning process, duty to consult and the industry sector’s strategic outlook. It is DPI’s aim that the outcome of the process can be a shared vision for the extractive industry sector.

The industry has generally expressed concern that expansion of community consultation requirements for changed WA’s and new operations could place unreasonable cost burdens on industry and flow on to private and public sector projects. Several small efficiencies are proposed such as a Code of Practice to reduce complexity of Work Authorities.

Peter McCluskey 0408 496 588 will be happy to provide further information on any of the above items or visit www.vlpa.asn.au
