Latest Safety Statistics Show Room for Improvement

By on June 16, 2009

The latest safety statistics from WorkSafe show that there is still plenty of work to be done to improve safety in Victoria’s extractive industry. CMPA Executive Director ROGER BUCKLEY presents an overview of the latest findings.

AN analysis of the 2007/08 safety statistics for the extractive industry in Victoria from WorkSafe indicates that whilst safety in 2007/08 did not reach the record low levels of the previous year, the LTI frequency and incidence rates were still well below the elevated levels of the 1990s.

The Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (number of lost time injuries per million hours worked) is a measure of the risk of lost time injuries and key indicator. The Victorian extractive industry rate is level with the national average for the resources sector in general.

Whilst this is applaudable, there is still considerable opportunity to improve, as indicated by the 2006/07 figures. Whilst the total number of workers employed and hours worked were about 10% less in 2007/08 than the previous year, the days lost, LTI, LTI frequency rate and LTI incidence rate all increased 70 – 100%.

It is pleasing to note that again, no fatalities occurred in the industry in 2007/08.

As previously noted, the CMPA has made arrangements with WorkSafe fora number of places available for free OHS consultancies in 2009/10. Any business with less than 50 employees – CMPA member or not, is encouraged to make use of this service to further improve safety on your site.

To book a session, contact the Secretariat. CMPA encourages it members to provide relevant safety reports to WorkSafe (Ph: 132360) to ensure that industry wide statistics are as accurate as possible to properly inform policy development and inspection activities.
