Alex Fraser & SAMI Bitumen Technologies win 2025 AfPA Award

Earlier this year, Alex Fraser and SAMI Bitumen Technologies received the Australian Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA) State Award for Outstanding Project Under $10 Million for the Toll Road Upgrade project in Altona North.

The project’s outstanding achievements were further recognised when they also received the national award for the same category at the AfPA International Conference in October.

Central to the project’s success was the trial and integration of advanced, environmentally responsible materials and reducing disruption for the community.

SAMIBioPrime, developed by SAMI Bitumen Technologies, is a petroleum solvent-free bitumen emulsion that enables rapid penetration of base courses, allowing subsequent layers to be applied within just one hour.

This innovation not only accelerated construction, minimised disruption, increased productivity and efficiency and reduced environmental impact, as SAMIBioPrime is almost carbonneutral and free from volatile organic compounds.

I-Brid, a high-performance hybrid modified binder, delivered exceptional resistance to rutting and fatigue, making it ideal for the heavy truck traffic characteristics of Toll Rd. Its superior workability and compactability allowed paving teams to achieve optimal density efficiently, further enhancing the road’s longevity.
