Changes to work authority annual reporting
HELEN J FOARD, DJPR.
The Victorian Government’s Extractive Resources Strategy commits to better industry reporting and sharing of data across the quarrying sector and planning agencies.
A priority of the Strategy is to improve the type of information submitted by industry in its annual reports to Earth Resources Regulation.
From 30 June 2021, new regulations require work authority holders to provide new information, including resource estimates, when submitting annual returns.
The new information will enable better planning of quarry development and help ensure reliable and cost-effective supplies of sand, stone and gravel are available for construction into the future.
To assist industry to understand and meet the new reporting requirements, the Victorian Government is working with industry representatives to develop guidance material.
Operators are encouraged to begin planning for this change now.
Chair of the Extractives Strategy Taskforce John Krbaleski said
“We want to help industry prepare their reports as accurately as possible and in a simple and consistent way.“
“We recognise that operators will have different levels of information about their resource estimates, so we will be asking them to self-assess their level of confidence in the accuracy of the data they are reporting”.
Collecting this data will be an important step in understanding the current supply and demand balance and will help the government and industry work together to avoid potential shortfalls.
The new data will be used to ensure that affordable access to sand, stone, gravel and other materials can be maintained over the long-term.
When it comes to annual reporting time, all work authority holders will receive guidance information either physically or electronically, and it will be also available on the Earth Resources website.
