ALAN BLOOMFIELD, Recycling Manager at City Circle Group reports on the development of the business.

CITY CIRCLE GROUP commenced business like many demolition contractors, in excavation and civil works projects. As this work started to include site reinstatement and general demolition work the company’s expertise broadened and today the Group has grown to be a major force in major demolition and C&D waste recycling in Australia.

Some 33 years later, City Circle is now a leading demolition company in Australia and expert in commercial and industrial demolition projects. The Company has a dedicated team of professionals offering a comprehensive service provision including project consultancy; commercial; industrial and domestic demolition, partial building demolition and dismantling; demolition within hazardous environments such as petro-chemical facilities, asbestos removal project management as well as on-site crushing of base and hardstand materials.

City Circle’s founder, Peter Skidmore was determined to divert demolition waste materials from landfills and commenced the design and construction of dedicated Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling facilities to process – not only City Circle’s own C&D waste materials – but also material from other demolition contractors.

City Circle was one of the pioneers of demolition and construction materials recycling in Victoria. It took almost a decade to develop product acceptance as well as the processing systems and specialized equipment to transform waste concrete into viable, high quality, VicRoads certified construction materials for use in State Government roads and municipal and industrial civil infrastructure projects.

City Circle now has two major recycling facilities in Brooklyn and Dandenong servicing the Greater Melbourne region and an 18Ha site currently being developed at Melton.  The Skidmore family have full involvement in the recycling business. Peter’s wife Deborah filling the role of Managing Director and son Matt, Operations Manager of the Recycling business.

Demolition materials recycling was a natural progression for the business and City Circle understood, that as its core business activities must involve an inherent consideration of the environment. It made sense to adopt a proactive approach and establish integrated recycling operations which would allow a substantial reduction in the volume of waste directed to landfill and also reduce the rapidly rising costs associated with C&D waste disposal.

The way of the future today is to transform waste which can be recycled into valuable resources to create more sustainable cities. Recycling C&D waste materials like concrete was inevitable. It was one of the largest solid waste contributors accelerating landfill depletion, and as this material is made up of sand and aggregates it is logical to reprocess it for re-use as a construction product. Steel reinforcement is salvaged from the concrete and recycled separately.

City Circle Recycling joined the CMPA in December 2013 to strengthen its industry associations and demonstrate its ongoing commitment to growth and sustainability in the Construction and Demolition waste concrete recycling sector.

C&D concrete recycling operations employ similar crushing, screening and conveying equipment to those used by quarries processing natural stone products. Operational procedures and OHS requirements also have much in common and the wide range of training and education courses offered by the CMPA is seen by City Circle as a unique opportunity for its employees to interact and learn from other members of the industry group.

Recovering resources from Construction & Demolition waste is a sustainable business and Recycling Manager, Alan Bloomfield, has a wealth of experience in this area, having managed similar businesses in Australia and overseas where such practices are now well established. Alan is also a recently elected member of the CMPA management committee.

“The recycled product is generally classified for use as VicRoads standard road base and engineered fill that would traditionally have been sourced as virgin quarry material.”
