CONUNDRUM HOLDINGS PTY LTD
MARK WAGNER from Conundrum Holdings Pty Ltd reports how the company utilizes state of the art plant and technology alongside caring for the environment (as per the below photo on this page).
Profiled in this article is Brian Calovic, a Conundrum manager who has utilized the training and funding the company provides to advance the technology and environmental management required in the Extractive Industries.
Brian had trained and qualified as an A grade motor mechanic, when he came to Conundrum’s Northern Quarries Epping site in 1995. He was in search of a career change that would offer a structured pathway of training and development, culminating in management in an important industry sector.
After proving to be a hardworking and competent trainee, Brian completed the Box Hill Quarry Manager’s course and moved to Stawell in 1999 to manage Conundrum’s Stawell Quarry.
Even with new responsibilities Brian and wife Janet found time to integrate into the local community as a professional couple, with hobby farm aspirations and to start a family. Young Joseph, 6 and Gabriel, 3 years of age are Brian and Janet’s pride and joy.
Brian has always acquainted himself with the technological advancements the company has constantly made to gain productivity and improvements in OH&S.
Brian said “Conundrum has constantly upgraded its Citect programs to maximize crushing and screening automation. Stawell Quarry was the first Conundrum site to adopt the technology and I have been provided with all the resources required to maximize its potential. We have never stopped moving ahead with productivity and safety gains at the Stawell Quarry by implementing state of the art technology.”
Going hand in hand with technological developments, Conundrum’s Stawell Quarry has been at the forefront of progressive rehabilitation efforts in the Victorian Extractive Industries.
“The primary objective of the rehabilitation is to leave the site in a safe and stable landform,” Brian said. “Complex environmental issues are tackled, culminating in a detailed and constantly upgraded rehabilitation plan. Issues such as a weed control are recorded and monitored for success in identifying weed species and protecting indigenous weed species.”
Brian is very pleased that the efforts he has gone to with the tree planting program contributes to off setting carbon emissions and creates a long term environmental advantage.
Along with DPI and DSE involvement with the rehabilitation work, local knowledge and experience has been provided by groups such as Project Platypus and other land care groups.
Brian added “This form of hand in hand community engagement has always been encouraged and by fostering this involvement both the community and the environment benefit.”
Conundrum has recently undertaken a major plant up grade at its Northern Quarries site. The development of plant automation has again involved Brian. The company has made constant upgrades of communication technology, enabling Brian to assist from country Victoria, while keeping a constant eye on his important land management responsibilities.
Stawell Quarry is a nominee in the 2009 Strzelecki Awards sponsored by DPI and The Banksia Foundation.
Conundrum has generously made the Stawell Quarry site accessible to any other CMPA member wanting to share the knowledge gained over the years.
