The recent AGM saw changes in the CMPA’s Management Committee, writes SARAH ANDREW, CMPA Project Manager.

AUGUST 16 saw a new Chairperson and four Members elected to positions on the CMPA Management Committee at the Annual General Meeting. Tim Bird from Allstone Quarries has taken over from Grant Phillips as Chairperson.

Garry Barclay from Local Mix Quarries, David Carrucan from Recycling Industries, Garry Cranny from Dandy Premix, and John Mawson from EB Mawson & Sons have all taken on Management Committeee roles.

Tim Bird has been on the Management Committee of the CMPA for a number of years. His father, Graham, was one of the founding Members of the CMPA. Allstone Quarries is a family owned business with Tim and his brother Wes managing the business’ daily operations.

Garry Barclay has been with Local Mix Quarries for 12 years during which time he has been involved in all aspects of the operations and most recently become the site’s Quarry Manager. Garry recently completed his Certificate IV in Extractive Industries through Box Hill Institute of TAFE. Local Mix Quarries are located in the Geelong area and run a basalt quarry and sand plant.

From L-R: Bruce McClure, Garry Barclay, Basil Natoli, Tim Bird, John Mawson,
David Batson, Garry Cranny, Grant Phillips, Robin Hocking and David Carrucan

David Carrucan has been with Recycling Industries for a relatively short time in the role of Production Manager, however has been in the industry for most of his working life in managerial roles. Recycling Industries, also known as Alex Frasers, operates a number of recycling plants throughout metropolitan Melbourne and recently expanded to a basalt quarry in Epping.

Garry Cranny, as a director of Dandy Premix, only recently entered the extractive industries when the company purchased Yarra Valley Quarries. He has bravely taken on the role of assisting in the development of the CMPA’s educational aspects.

John Mawson, EB Mawson & Sons, has been involved in the industry at all levels over the course of his working life. Recently he took on the position of Managing Director for Mawsons, and it is in this position that we welcome John to the Management Committee. Mawsons operate throughout northern Victoria with a number of quarries, sand plants and concrete plants.

Peter Baenziger, David Eldridge, Grant Phillips and Basil Natoli remained on the CMPA Management Committee, with Robin Hocking remaining in the position of Treasurer and Bruce McClure as Public Officer.

MERGING OF EIDA INTO MRSDA

Your Management Committee in representing you during the consultation process of the review of the Extractive Industries Development Act 1995 (EIDA), has again witnessed the values which initially drew the association together, namely a concern for our future and that of our families, our employees and this industry.

Personal and sincere emotion from those we have consulted with has been witnessed as the true extent of the proposed merger is disclosed.

In the eyes, voices and body language you sense total bewilderment when issues such as ‘Duty to Consult’, increased rehabilitation bond obligations and the loss of our identity are outlined.

It is with this in mind that the Management Committee has instigated discussions with the main political parties to discuss our concerns in an endeavour to influence a more equitable outcome on these matters.

Due to the importance of this issue, the CMPA’s submissions to the DPI on this matter are included in full in this magazine
