From the Secretariat (Issue 123)

By on August 21, 2022

DR ELIZABETH GIBSON, CMPA General Manager.

In the last Issue of Sand & Stone (122), I said I would report any response to my query seeking clarification of the regional road maintenance budget for 2022/23. Below is an extract from a letter received from The Hon Ben Carroll MP Minister for Roads and road safety.

“The $101 million for regional road upgrades that you referred to in your correspondence is only one component of the investment on regional roads being made in the 2022 Victorian State Budget.

The Budget also includes an investment of more than $780 million in the coming financial year on maintaining Victoria’s roads. This is an increase of more than $25 million in comparison to 2021-22. The majority of this road maintenance funding will be spent on maintaining regional road assets. The Andrews Labor Government has substantially increased our road maintenance budget during our time in office – with annual average spending
of over $800 million for each of the past four years compared to just $493 million in the four years before we were elected to office (2010 – 2014).”

Thank you to John Krbaleski, Head Resources, Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions for his dedication to and support for the extractive industry even whilst we were at odds at times. John was in the position for three years which provided stability and enabled him to have a good understanding of the industry. Good luck to John in his future role (departs 5 August 2022). Jane Burton will be Acting Head Resources until recruitment is finalised.

By now you will all have received a hard copy of the CMPA Rehabilitation Project “Review of rehabilitation and bond framework for quarries in Victoria 2022” prepared by EHS Support (https://cmpavic.asn.au/publications/submissions/). I have also been informed that The Hon Jaala Pulford MP Minister for
Resources has directed the Department to give consideration to the recommendations. There will be a presentation by the Department on this at the CMPA General Meeting being held on 4 August 2022 in Traralgon.
