Articles For The CMPA News

“Does Your Company Have Welding Equipment on Site” was an article published in Issue 15 of the CMPA News. This article was produced and submitted by David Crosby, the OH&S Manager at Quantec Solutions.

The CMPA would like to consider publishing such articles as a regular segment in each issue, as we believe they are both informative and beneficial for those employed in the extractive industry.

The CMPA would therefore like to invite other Associate members to submit such articles for upcoming issues of CMPA News. The articles we require will need to be of a technical nature, rather than an advertisement for your company. The information provided should assist in proving a method of ‘best practice’ for the industry. Please see the above mentioned article by David Crosby in Issue 15 for an example of what we are looking for.

Brain Teaser

A missionary is caught by cannibals and must choose his own death. Under tribal law he must make a statement, if it is true he will die by beheading, if it is false he will die by poison arrows. The missionary thinks about this and then makes his statement. Under tribal law the Chief must let him go.

What was the statement?

See bottom of page for answer.

State of Play

WESTERN REGION:

The acceptance of crushed rock as a superior substitute for various natural material is continuing in the north-central and west of the state despite the abnormal dry conditions persisting through winter.

It was encouraging to see a local CMPA member result in a positive outcome regarding a Work Authority application that was appealed. More detail is on page 10. A major issue revolved around poor information relating to crystalline silica in sand. This issue will arise again because of limited knowledge on the subject and the ability of the ill informed to use the hysteria of health issues to distort the facts.
PETER LANGLANDS

SOUTHERN REGION:

Until April 30th demand for our products and services was strong, however May and June have been slow. With the wet weather through June, and I should imagine the following months, I would not expect work to pick up until Spring.
DAVID ELDRIDGE

In June, the weather has broken with widespread rain. Road works have slowed in the region and contractors are hesitant to start new ones.
RAYMOND WALSH, BALLARAT REGION

NORTHERN REGION:

Steady work is coming up with the causeway between Shepparton and Mooroopna being constructed over the next 12 months. Housing sales are moving along well, and it is currently difficult to find a house to rent in the area. There are at least 5 subdivisions underway within the city of Shepparton. Rain in the last month has kicked things along for farmers who are looking at new crops.
ROD NORTH

EASTERN REGION:

Work has dropped off since April. The next 6 months consists of limited projects and developments. Land prices have stabilised, however land transactions have dropped off about 70%. There is potential for a future power plant in the area, however if this does not occur, over the next 4 years the state will need to face issues with regards to water supply.
ROB MATTHEWS

MELBOURNE REGION:

Birds-eye-view of the Bass Coast Shire. At the moment, in my eyes, it is the fastest growing country area within the state. Businesses in the area are moving into later model capital acquisitions. Work for the next 12 months is secured. The coastal areas are experiencing massive demand upon the available land by holiday makers, retirees and tourism.
KEVIN DONOHUE

Where Do I Come From?

The CMPA often receives calls from members asking “Where do I come from?” or “Which region do I belong to?”

Firstly, if you are an Associate Member, you should talk to Mr Andrew Lambing, the Chairperson of the Associate Committee.

If you are a Voting Member, it is a little trickier, you need to know the shire of your Head Office, then refer to the map below.

Voting members should talk to Mr Grant Phillips, the Chairperson of the CMPA.

See details below.

Brain teaser solution

The missionary says:

“I will die by poison arrows.”

If he does die by poison arrows then the statement made was true, and he should have died by beheading.

If he dies by another means then the statement made was false and he should have died by poison arrows…
