REGIONAL RA IL LINK IN MELBOURNE’S NORTH WEST
BRUCE McCLURE General Manager CMPA comments on a recent presentation by Corey Hannett , Chief Executive Officer, Regional Rail Link Authority.
AT the Civil Construction Alliance meeting held on 21 February 2013, Mr Corey Hannett , Chief Executive Officer, Regional Rail Link Authority, made a presentation on the regional rail project which is currently in progress in the North West suburbs of Melbourne.
The Regional Rail Link Authority is managing the delivery of the Regional Rail Link project and is doing this in consultation with the Victorian Department of Transport and the Federal Department of Infrastructure. Due to the size and complicated nature of the scope of works, the project is being delivered in partnership with, Metro Trains Melbourne and V/Line.
Regional Rail Link is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project and Melbourne’s first new major rail line in 80 years. The project is jointly funded by the Victorian and Australian Governments. The Commonwealth is contributing $3.225 billion and the project is due for completion in 2016.
The following are extracts from Mr Hannett ’s presentation:
The Regional Rail Link is an infrastructure project designed to remove major bottlenecks in Victoria’s rail network. It will do this by untangling metropolitan and regional tracks as they travel through Melbourne’s west into the heart of the city. Dedicated regional tracks will be built fr om West Werribee Junction to Deer Park, then along the existing rail corridor fr om Sunshine to Southern Cross Station. When completed in 2016, passengers on the Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat lines will have a streamlined journey through the metropolitan system.
