STUDENT SITE VISITS ON AGAIN

By on July 3, 2003

The return from the Christmas break heralded the beginning of the annual Australian Student Mineral Venture (ASMV) site tours.

Prior to involvement of the CMPA, ASMV tours were primarily based on the mining industry.  This year extractive industry tours organised by the CMPA were made of the Mount Shadwell quarry in Mortlake and Barro Group’s Bacchus Marsh sand pit.

The CMPA also arranged for a talk by the Department of Primary Industries detailing their role within the extractive industry.

The ASMV is a summer school held over two weeks in January by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Students who attend are going into their final year of VCE and are interested in the minerals industry. According to AusIMM after completing their studies 60 per cent of the ASMV participants will end up working within the industry.

This year students were privileged to have Moyne Shire mayor, Cnr Brenda Hampson, show them through the Mount Shadwell quarry.

Two hours prior to the conclusion of the ASMV 2003, Sara Harbridge of the DPI gave a presentation on the operations and opportunities for employment available within the Department. Although somewhat exhausted by the busy week, students were appreciative of her time and effort and asked several questions at the end of her talk.

The CMPA intends to continue its involvement with ASMV in the future and members willing to include their sites in the tour are encouraged to contact the CMPA.

If you have children going into year 12 who are interested in the industry, mention the ASMV. It is a perfect opportunity for them to see what opportunities are available for employment within the extractive and mining industry.  For further information, check out the ASMV website which can be accessed through: www.ausimm.com or contact Sarah at the CMPA.
