What’s News? (Issue 25)

By on February 16, 2006

Over the last two months, the CMPA has been relatively busy finishing off a number of projects that have been around for some time.

This has seen the production and release of the ‘OHS Support in Quarries 03 – Hazards and Controls in Fixed Plant Operations’ and the next installment of the Education Newsletter. We are also in the process of finalising full reviews of the Work Safely Reference Manual (incorporating the changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004) and the CMPA Newsletter (in a more user friendly format).

Most notably, the last two months has seen the engagement of Mr Adrian Town as Development Manager after 46 years at Terex Jaques. He will be dedicated to visiting members to better understand their concerns and issues, and will be able to detail to you personally what the CMPA is doing and where it is going, and will be introducing the CMPA to others in the industry at the same time. A brief history of Adrian is in this issue.

This year is looking to be one where members will see the completion of several long awaited tools and is sure to see many new issues coming onto the radar. We hope to be able to continue to give value to your membership, and look forward to working with you in the future.

Guarding Blitz

Again, we are reminding members that now is an opportune time to check that their sites are compliant with respect to guarding of plant with the DPI conducting spot audits in the coming months.

Remember that a CMPA Workshop is to be held on March 21 at William Adams Laverton to discuss this very issue with the intent of developing examples for members to apply at their sites. The DPI will be presenting a report on the blitz and Jane Sims of Box Hill TAFE has been confirmed as the facilitator.

The Workshop includes a site visit to Readymix at Oaklands Junction for the hazard identification task.

Extractive Industries Development Act 1995 Review

By now, all members should be aware that the Extractive Industries Development Act (EIDA) is in the process of being reviewed. This is because all Acts have a clause requiring them to be reviewed every 10 years.

Following the meeting on January 20 (full report in this issue) the CMPA has engaged Mr Peter Day of Peter Day Consulting and Mr Andrew Lumb of Nevett Ford Lawyers to assist in developing the association’s response.

Members will be given another opportunity to review and comment upon the review in the coming months.

Crushing and Screening Reference Manuals

The Policy and Special Issues Committee has awarded the tender for the development of the eight Crushing and Screening Reference Manuals to Box Hill TAFE. This is at a cost of over $55,000 and will result in eight Reference Manuals for the use of members.

Your support is still required for this project. Financial assistance will ensure the best possible document is made to service the industry for years to come.
