Congratulations

The CMPA congratulates Mr Ken Mawson of E B Mawson & Sons on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the quarrying industry.

Commiserations

The CMPA extends its commiserations to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Mr Steve Hickson of Emeco International following his untimely passing in June 2006.

Generic Conditions of Contract for Works over $80,000

Over the last four years the CMPA has worked on developing an industry accepted generic conditions of contract for major works. Finally, the document is in its final stages being reviewing and approval from the ACCC and final approval from Vic Roads.

At present, the draft is being trialed by a member in north-western Victoria to ensure that it is relevant and covers all potential issues. Such a trial gives all parties (i.e. Vic Roads, the lead contractor and our member) the opportunity to learn how the document works and what benefits it would provide each party with.

Once completed, training will be offered to any interested member or their employees. Please feel free to register your interest with Briony or Sarah.

Crushing and Screening Reference Manuals

The project is moving along steadily with the final draft of the first of the eight manuals ‘Conduct Crushing Operations’ presented to the Honourable Fran Bailey at the CMPA Annual Dinner on August 12.

For further details on the Crushing & Screening Project see article in this issue.

Proposed Future Works

Mobile Plant

At the July Management Committee Meeting, it was resolved that the Policy and Special Issues Committee is to develop and release tender documents for the development of the following units:

  • Conduct Face Loader Operations
  • Conduct Excavator Operations
  • Conduct Haul Truck Operations
  • Conduct Sales Loader Operations

Funding this development through the CMPA will ensure that they are completed in a timely manner and are available to members as soon as possible.

Explosives

Spence Herd has just commenced the development of reference manuals specific to the following units:

  • Conduct blast survey
  • Handle and transport explosives
  • Conduct shot firing

Much of the information required for this training is readily available and as such this project should not take overly long.

It is not intended for the CMPA to deliver this training, rather these documents are being developed to support the training already provided and supply participants from the quarrying industry with information pertinent to their daily operations.

Meeting Facilitation Course

Following a number of Member enquiries the CMPA is investigating a meeting facilitation training course recognised under the EITP to assist Quarry Managers and OHS Representatives in facilitating safety and other such meetings.
