WORKSAFE

By on July 15, 2004

On 20 January 2004, the Minister for Work Cover, Rob Hulls, launched a major Work Safe campaign to highlight the dangers of excessive exposure to UV radiation from sunlight, and to improve the level of UV protection for construction and other outdoor workers.

Stage 1

The first stage of Work Safe’s campaign is designed to:

  • Improve the ability of employers to fulfill their OHS obligations to protect outdoor workers from harmful exposure to UV radiation, and
  • Raise workers’ awareness of their legal obligations to co-operate with their employer in adopting measures to protect themselves from UV radiation

Inspectors will distribute copies of a new Work Safe Guidance Note,

Sun Protection for Construction and Other Outdoor Workers, which provides information on the dangers of over-exposure to UV radiation and provides examples of appropriate sun protection measures.

Stage 2

The second stage of Work Safe’s campaign will occur during July 2004.  It will involve the close examination of the UV protection policies of a number of construction contractors and utilities businesses.

Stage 3

The second stage of the campaign will once more involve a large number of site visits during the 2004/05 summer.  During this stage, employers who are not adequately controlling workers’ exposure to UV radiation can expect to be issued with Notices by Work Safe inspectors.
