ANITA MACARTNEY, Director Mactown Consulting

Mactown Consulting has partnered with WorkSafe Victoria to develop tailored safety tools for small quarries, to help operators meet their legal occupational health and safety (OHS) obligations and improve how they document systems of work.

The tools will include:
• A Safety Management System (SMS) – ready to use manual with policies, procedures, and templates in accordance with the OHS Act, Regulations, and ISO 45001;
• Bowtie analysis for fatality risks in quarries. This is a risk management method commonly used in mining, aviation, oil, and gas, to identify gaps in how risk is being managed and which of the controls are critical. The bowtie diagrams will provide operators with examples of how other sites are managing risk by clearly identifying preventative and mitigative control measures.
• Safety training material. This PowerPoint presentation will include fundamentals of safety risk management, an introduction to the SMS, and key legislative requirements
.

The project is due for completion in February 2023, at which time the tools will be made available to Victorian quarry operators for free.

Mactown would love to hear from quarry operators on what they consider are fatality risks in their sector (i.e., silica exposure, mobile plant rollover, ground stability), and what they feel is missing in terms of guidance, templates etc., which may be included in the project.
