Securing more extractive resources for future growth
The Victorian Government is developing three new Strategic Extractive Resource Areas (SERAs) to help ensure the long-term supply of quarry materials for the state’s construction needs.
The proposed SERAs are situated near Lang Lang in the Shire of Cardinia, Oaklands Junction in the City of Hume, and Trafalgar in the Shire of Baw Baw. Their selection was endorsed by the former joint government-industry Extractives Strategy Taskforce, which included representation from the
Construction Material Processors Association.
The primary goal of establishing these SERAs is to implement new planning policies and controls within defined areas of prospective hard rock and sand resources. This approach will streamline the approval process for future quarry applications, reducing the time required for approvals.
Refinement of the proposed SERAs involved comprehensive engagement with local councils, government agencies, Traditional Owners, and water organisations.
Implementing these SERAs also provides greater assurance to local communities regarding the planning and management of quarries. By excluding areas known to be sensitive or less suitable for quarrying, these SERAs give communities the confidence that their local values are understood.
Public consultation on the three proposed SERAs began on 2 October and concluded on 18 November 2024. During this period, public information sessions were held in each area to inform community members and gather feedback. Information about the proposed SERAs can be found on the Engage Victoria website: www.engage.vic.gov.au/sera-langlang-oaklandsjunction-trafalgar.
