Box Hill Institute suspends training
The CMPA has had a long relationship with Box Hill Institute spanning over 20 years. They are currently the only provider of Surface Extraction Operations training for quarry employees and quarry managers within Victoria.
Box Hill Institute has suspended delivery of their Surface Extraction Operations training program; enrolled students (from regional Victoria) were not informed until they attended Box Hill Institute for their first day of training, funded by their employers.
Additionally, some students may have required accommodation, again paid for by employers.
This is unsatisfactory and detrimental to the quarry industry which underpins the building and infrastructure development industry in Victoria. No time frame was provided for when training would recommence.
My assessment of the matter is that the quarry industry has been abandoned by the State Government training facility due to the lack of understanding of:
- The importance of the quarry industry to the economic viability of Victoria.
- The contribution of this training towards lifting of Occupational Health and Safety standards at quarry sites.
This is compounded by a relatively smaller number of students and lack of succession planning for trainers.
Below is an email from Box Hill Institute:
“Over the Christmas period, Box Hill Institute has undertaken several changes within the Surface Extraction program, including an organisational change, leadership transition and a comprehensive review of the program and the resources that support it.
We have recognised that additional time is required to enhance and upgrade the program to ensure it continues to meet the high-quality standards expected by our partners and learners.
As a result, we will be postponing enrolments into these courses until this improvement work is completed.
We understand this may create challenges for your organisation, and we appreciate your patience as we strengthen the program offering.
Delivering a high quality, robust training experience remains our priority, and these updates are an important step in maintaining that commitment.
We will continue to accept enquiries and will provide updated timelines as they become available so you can plan effectively for upcoming intakes.
We know this is not ideal for your organisation, and we appreciate
your support whilst we complete this work.”
The CMPA is actively following up with State and Federal Governments.
