Alex Fraser in partnership with Cross River Rail project

Alex Fraser reached a major milestone in partnership with the Cross River Rail project, delivering more than 90,000 tonnes of recycled materials to one of Queensland’s most significant infrastructure developments.

Queensland Recycling Sales Manager Simon Lake said this achievement highlights Alex Fraser’s commitment to sustainable construction and innovation in South-East Queensland.

Inspecting material

“We’ve worked with UNITY for a long time to supply this critical project for Brisbane. Our team has supplied high-quality recycled products, including 20mm concrete aggregates, Type 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5 road bases as well as crusher dust to the Cross River Rail project, ensuring the project meets stringent engineering and environmental standards.”

Alex Fraser worked with UNITY to supply a 20mm aggregate that meets TMR specification.

Simon described how Alex Fraser and UNITY have worked together to develop innovative solutions for the Cross River Rail project.

“We’ve also collaborated from an innovation perspective, which enabled Alex Fraser to supply a 20mm aggregate that meets Section 19.2.8 of TMR’s MRTS04 specification, to the project. It’s an exciting milestone for Alex Fraser to be involved in. Cross River Rail stands out as the largest project I’ve been involved with so far. We have supplied more than 80,000 tonnes of recycled material to several project sites from both our Archerfield and Nudgee recycling facilities.”

Building greener roads

Simon explained how density savings from using recycled content also reduce costs and carbon emissions.

“Our Green Roads Construction Materials also offer increased density savings when compared to traditional quarried aggregates. Due to the volume of materials supplied, this equates to a couple of hundred fewer trucks, which also contributes to further cost and carbon savings on the project.”

The partnership is not only limited to supplying materials, but the recycling facilities have received a significant amount of C&D material for recycling from the source project.

“This project also involves receiving more than 19,000 tonnes of concrete, asphalt and brick back from the project. These materials were returned to Alex Fraser for recycling, demonstrating a practical commitment to the circular economy in action.”

Alex Fraser has supplied more than 80,000 tonnes of products and recovered around 19,000 tonnes of C&D material at the Cross River Rail project.

The Cross River Rail project is now in its sixth year of an anticipated eight-year timeline, with potential scope extensions. Throughout this period, Alex Fraser has demonstrated that recycled materials are not only fit for purpose but also cost-effective, delivering performance comparable to quarried aggregates.

UNITY Sustainability Manager Glenn Hedges explained why he and UNITY continue to choose Green Roads Construction Materials.

“Our team of engineers and project partners have shown growing confidence in Alex Fraser’s Green Roads Construction Materials because they know they perform, repeatedly specifying Alex Fraser materials for our project’s applications. The appetite for recycled materials is growing in Queensland, and our team are understanding more about the benefits of choosing recycled aggregates. Carbon savings are a bonus, but if the difference between quarried and recycled materials is cost neutral, those carbon savings can also be the deciding factor.”

He also said that a reliable delivery service has been advantageous.

“We need to keep these projects moving forward to achieve our timeline. Consistent quality, cost competitiveness and compliance with all relevant standards are all important factors for us, and Alex Fraser has met them all.”

From glass sand innovation to advanced processing techniques, Alex Fraser and UNITY reflect their leadership in circular economy practices, continuing to push boundaries in resource recovery.

To date, by choosing Alex Fraser’s Green Roads Construction Materials, the Cross River Rail Project has resulted in:

  • 82, 942 tonnes diverted from landfill,
  • 403,722kg carbon emissions reduced,
  • 19,930,910 glass bottles recycled, equivalent to 49,827 wheelie bins and
  • 230 fewer truck movements

Calculations are based on Austroads Doc AP-R416-12 and the Life Cycle Assessment completed RMIT Melbourne (10/6/2009).
