Cover Story – Supply and demand for extractive resources

By on May 29, 2015

Work starts on strategic planning for Victoria’s future extractive recources.

Your help will be requested to plan for the State’s future requirements for extractive resources, to underpin construction, jobs and economic growth across Victoria.

The Victorian Government recognises that access to high quality sources of extractive materials is crucial to build public infrastructure, affordable housing and corporate development across the State.

Work is now underway to forecast the demand for extractive resources and sources of supply to 2050. The project will identify key extractive resource supplies, including existing and future quarries at a metropolitan and regional level.

The findings will be used to inform Government decisions to enable the development of quarries within Victoria’s planning framework.

The project is being overseen by a joint industry – governmentExtractive Industries Taskforce.

The taskforce is chaired by Minerals Development Victoria (part of the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources), with industry represented by the Construction Materials Processors Association and the Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia. Senior departmental representatives for transport and planning are also on the taskforce.

The taskforce’s work is one of the key actions being implemented in response to recommendations made by the Victorian Parliament’s Economic Development Infrastructure Committee (EDIC) inquiry into the development of earth resources.

It will address the key challenges of accessing supplies of high quality extractive resources alongside other competing land uses, as well as the encroachment of development towards existing and future quarries.

The success of this work will depend on industry providing firsthand knowledge of their quarry operations on the ground.

Over the coming months, consultants engaged by Minerals Development Victoria will undertake an industry-wide survey and a selection of interviews with quarrying operators to verify supply related issues and opportunities.

This is an important opportunity for CMPA members to get involved in this strategic initiative by participating in the confidential industry survey.

Further details of this project will soon be distributed to all holders of extractive resources work authorities.
