Operator Training Options
ROSS KELLY, Business Manager from William Adams Institute of Training reports on Operator Training for 2014.
William Adams Institute of Training (WAIT) has delivered further sessions of Haul Truck Operator focused skill training in the latter part of 2013 and is planning more sessions in the New Year.
This course has been received well with its strong content of safety and production improvement. In November further extractive units were added to WAIT’s scope which means in 2014 the same quality and style of skill focused training will be available for; Excavator, Loader, Dozer and Grader Operators.
These courses offer something for a range of skill and experience levels from medium to highly experienced staff.
There is another option for staff new to machine operations or someone who may be changing to a machine they have never operated, Machine Simulators. Simulation has been around in many forms for some years, more commonly associated with aircraft pilots
Heavy equipment simulators make sense for similar reasons in regards to safety and avoiding potential damage to expensive capital equipment. Following are some of the benefits and reasons to utilize simulators versus a production machine;
- No loss of production due to a machine being used for training
- No fuel cost
- Eliminate the chance of machine damage/excess wear and tear
- Closer supervision during exercises
- Performance results recorded for use as a comparison of improvement
- Can be used to screen candidates or retrain/check skill levels of existing Operators
Machine Simulators are available for rent by the hour (WAIT facility), day, weekly or units can be purchased. Currently WAIT has the following models available for use; Excavator, Haul Truck and Large Face Loader.
The following units, including the previously listed, are available for purchase; Wheel Tractor Scraper, Small Wheel Loader, Dozer (with ripping). Demonstrations are available on request.
