The New Toy

We are pleased to release the sixth issue of CMPA News, the first for 2002 following our 10th General Meeting on March 15th. Those fortunate enough to attend this meeting were informed of the education opportunities available to our industry from a plethora of quality speakers. They included Sydney based Des Caulfield (Executive Officer of the National Mining ITAB), Paul Kennett (Engineering Skills Training Board [Vic] Inc) representing the Victorian ITAB, Kevin Bannan (BizIsUs Pty Ltd) representing private enterprise possibilities, and David Gaulke (Box Hill Institute of TAFE).

In this issue we will provide a resume of the information provided by these speakers, as well as update the progress in all areas of interest, focusing members and interested observers on our needs for the future.

Once again this period has provided many challenges and opportunities for the Association, with all committees and membership being very active in dealing with issues.

REPORT FROM THE POLICY & SPECIAL ISSUES COMMITTEE

CMPA Induction Hand Book (IH)

The Management Committee has changed this document’s name to ‘Work Safely Reference Manual’ as it was considered a more appropriate name. We await a letter of support from the AWU prior to releasing the document to the printer.

CMPA – Polished Stone Value (PSV) Issue

CMPA legal associates have advised that there is a case to be answered. The presented reasons as to why Vic Roads altered the PSV from 48 to 52 and then back to 48 are disappointing. Our member is yet to receive a satisfactory resolution for the damage this action caused his business.

The Management Committee seeks closure of this issue prior to our AGM.

Upcoming issue for action

The Management Committee has requested the following documents be developed for CMPA Members:

  1. Material Safety Data Sheets to cover both materials used and produced.
  2. An emergency response document.
  3. Generic hazard risk assessment documents.

INTERLUDE

Test your skill by answering this ” Teaser”

The doorman at an exclusive club says one word to each prospective entrant. If that person answers the question correctly then they are allowed to enter.

A hopeful non-member observed carefully as a member approached.
The doorman said ‘twelve’,
The member replied six and was admitted.
A second member approached and the doorman said ‘six’.
The member replied ‘three’ and was admitted.
The non-member thought this is easy and stepped forward.
The doorman said ‘ten’.
The non-member replied ‘five’ and was angrily turned away.
How should have then non-member answered?

(Check your response at the bottom!)

Clue to the Teaser

The members and the doorman were consistent and logical in what they said and did. There was a code based solely on the numbers, which they followed.

Thought for the day!

ENLIGHTENED PERSPECTIVE.

These words were attributed to a person named Andy Rooney in an email message received from a friend. Whilst the editor has no knowledge of Andy we are grateful for his perspective.

I’ve learnt

That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an older person.
That when you are in love, it shows.
That just one person saying to me, ‘You’ve made my day!’ makes my day.
That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
That being kind is more important than being right.
That you should never say no to a gift from a child.
That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help in some other way.
That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.
That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.
That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child, did wonders for me as an adult.
That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.
That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.
That money doesn’t buy class.
That it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.
That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.
That the Lord did not do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?
That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.
That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
That love, not time, heals all wounds.
That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
That there is nothing sweeter than sleeping with your babies and feeling their breath on your cheeks.
That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
That life is tough, but I’m tougher.
That opportunities are never lost, someone will take the ones you miss.
That when you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
That I wish I could have told my Dad that I love him one more time before he passed away.
That one should keep his words soft and tender because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
That I can’t choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.
That when you’re newly born grandchild holds your little finger in their little fist, you are hooked for life.
That everyone wants to live on the top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.
That it is best to give advice only in two circumstances:
When it is requested.
When it is a life threatening situation.
The less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

To all of you my friends.

Teaser answer:

The CODE is the number of letters in the word spoken by the doorman. The non-member should have responded ‘three’.
