Pre-reform or Transitional Award?
As a result of the changes made to the Workplace Relations Act 1996 by the Workplace Relations Amendment (Workchoices) Act 2005 which came into full operation on 27 March 2006, the award system has been significantly changed.
The Workchoices Changes resulted in two different systems of awards being created, firstly a pre-reform award and secondly a transitional award.
A pre-reform award is a federal award created before the Workchoices Changes came into operation and covers employers that are constitutional corporations. A transitional award is a federal award created before the Workchoices Changes came into operation and covers employers that are not constitutional corporations.
Most Members would fall into the latter category.
Variations to the Transport Award
The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has varied the Transport Award by amending sub clause 15.2.1 regarding safety net adjustments and also inserting a new clause regarding school-based apprentices. This clause only applies to those employers subject to the Transitional Transport Workers Award 1998.

Mass Limits Charts—Update
It seems that the VicRoads Mass Limits charts published in Issue 32 of the CMPA News have caused a certain degree of confusion amongst our readers!
The main enquiry with regards to the published charts were that the individual axle figures displayed on the charts did not add up to the total given—however, this is not an error!
The explanation is that the initial total figure is the mass limit for the whole vehicle, and the individual figures in the brackets are the mass limit for each axle.
For example, the total mass limit for the GML is 42.5, with an individual maximum limit for each axle of 6, 16.5, 16.5 and 16.5.
Without the individual axle mass limit figures, a vehicle could technically be under the total vehicle mass limit of 42.5, however the mass limit of an individual axle could still be overloaded and hence not meet the requirements.
The figures provided on the chart indicate the overall mass limit for the vehicle and the individual mass limit for each axle to prevent such overloading circumstances arising.
