VLPA Update (Issue 35)
Annual General Meeting & Conference
The VLPA recently held its Annual General Meeting and Conference in Pakenham at which the Committee for 2007/08 was elected.
Tom McCann of Geelong Lime was elected as the new Chairman and has taken over from Gary Bascomb, who has remained on the Committee. The remaining Committee Members consist of Trevor Tovey (Treasurer), Murray Joseph (Secretary), Graham Heywood and Noel Letcher. Peter McCluskey continues as Business Manager.
We are grateful to Komatsu Australia, particularly Bob Jones and Galesafe Weighing, particularly the Gale family, for sponsoring this event.
Code of Conduct for Lime
The VLPA’s Code of Conduct for Lime was instituted early in 2006 following consultation with the State Chemical Laboratories and other relevant areas of the Department of Primary Industries.
The development of the Code of Conduct was driven by the sun setting of Victoria’s previous Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) (Fertilisers) Regulations. The Code of Conduct and the new Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) (Fertilisers) Regulations 2005 require the declaration of heavy metals if above certain limits and also requires that standard product labeling consists of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate content, neutralizing value, sizing and moisture.

Review of the Extractive Industries Development Act 1995
Along with other industry associations we have taken a keen interest in this process. At this stage, and there will be opportunity for further input, the issues are resource protection and ensuring that specialist regulatory functions are not devolved to generic regulators such as planning and environment type authorities. These major issues are being highlighted to the DPI.
Review of Native Vegetation Framework
The VLPA is represented, along with other mining and farming associations, on the government/industry working party reviewing the framework.
Industry concerns are being fed into the process and hopefully positive outcomes for industry will result. Members with concerns on this issue should contact Peter McCluskey to discuss them.
