VLPA Update (Issue 45)
There is currently plenty happening about regulation changes and government policy reviews in relation to our industry sector. PETER MCCLUSKEY from the Victoria Lime Producers Association reports.
AGRICULTURAL AND VETERINARY CHEMICALS (CONTROL OF USE) ACT 1992
DPI Chemical Standards Branch has advised that several changes have been made to the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Act 1992 as from 1 July 2009.
The key changes include:
- Recognising Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Authority (APVMA) Maximum Residue Limits for agricultural and veterinary chemicals in produce and animal food;
- A new offence for selling contaminated produce, which aims to protect public health and trade by discouraging the sale of contaminated produce; and
- A new offence for breaching a condition of a chemical use licence or permit.

FUTURE FARMING PROJECT
The Future Farming project is described as a whole of government initiative to boost farming services, drive growth and innovation in agriculture and help the sector respond to new challenges. Within the process a Rural Planning Group part of the focus of which includes acknowledging the relationship between land, water and other natural resources as a driver for the long term safeguarding of high quality agricultural landscapes and assessing how specific sectoral industries are accommodated in the planning system, and how the planning system
can respond to changes and adjustment.
We have responded to the discussion paper pointing out that it appears not to have taken account of the need to secure important agricultural resources such as current and future limestone resources as agricultural inputs with an important role going forward in relation to food security.
