The CMPA AGM & Dinner – The First Decade – 2009
At the CMPA Annual General Meeting and Dinner, guests were entertained and networked with industry peers thanks to the generous support provided by the night’s sponsors. Following is a review of the AGM and Dinner by GAVIN MOREIRA , CMPA Administration Officer.
AFTER a great team effort and months of hard work by the Secretariat, Saturday August 22 saw almost 200 Members and their guests gather at the Mercure Ballarat Hotel and Convention Centre in Ballarat for the ninth AGM and Annual Dinner.
The evening commenced with the Annual General Meeting with the Chairperson, Associate Chairperson, Education Chairperson, Policy & Special Issues Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary presenting their annual reports.
These are presented in the Annual Report available in the Members Only area of the CMPA website.
Robin Hocking, as Treasurer, presented the audited financial reports for consideration and these were approved. Key points from the reports included:
- The year ended with a moderate loss.
- The major sources of income were membership subscriptions, contributions from meetings and events, newsletter advertising and publication sales which were all higher than the previous years. But without the one off sponsorship for the crushing and screening manuals, income from conducting training and the finalisation of the WELL contracts, actual income was slightly less than the previous year.
- Employment expenses were the single largest expense in 2008/09. Other expenses included publications, consultants and the costs of holding meetings and events. The overall expenditure was slightly more than last year.
These figures outline the importance of continued membership which provides the financial basis for CMPA to continue its work.
Guest speaker Allan Beacom, Executive Office, Construction and Extractive Industry, WorkSafe Victoria talked about the highlights of the last twelve months and the key points for the year ahead for WorkSafe Victoria and the extractive industry.
The last order of business for the AGM was the re-election for a further 12 months of Tim Bird as Chairperson. We thank Tim for taking on this role again and look forward to working with him over the coming year.
Pre-dinner drinks were held in the Heritage Bar which allowed guests to meet and greet friends and peers over a beer or wine.
Soon it was time to move to the Eureka Ballroom where guests were welcomed to the evening by the talented MC, Warren Colbert. A few brief words were provided by Tim Bird, CMPA Chairperson on the highlights of the first ten years of the association with a quick preview of the year ahead.
He also acknowledged the hard work of Tom McKenny, Michelle Kerr and the participating members in developing the special publication marking the first decade of the CMPA ‘A Mosaic of Members Views’.
Robin Hocking also read letters of congratulations on the CMPA reaching its 10 year anniversary from the Minister for Energy Resources, Peter Batchelor and the Shadow Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy.
Gary Barclay from Local Mix Quarries gave the fascinating keynote presentation where he discussed his year spent working in Antarctica as a diesel mechanic. It was certainly an intriguing presentation, especially the rescue of his vehicle from a crevasse in -45 degrees C temperatures.
Another highlight of the evening was the comical and singing sensations ‘The Singing Waiters’ who made us laugh as well as get us in the groove with their singing prowess.
The dinner was a great success with many new contacts made and old ones renewed. We sincerely hope everyone had a great evening and as you can see from the photos it certainly appears that way!
