Value of Suppliers to the Extractive Industry
GAVIN MOREIRA, Member Services Manager of CMPA reports on the value of being a CMPA Associate Member.
The success of CMPA, the peak body in Victoria for family, private, Council and State Government quarries; and recyclers; is due to its membership base: Voting, Associate and Workforce members working together with one collective voice to State and Federal Governments.
The current COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need for all members of CMPA to work together for a common cause: keep the extractive industry operating to support the economic recovery. It has also highlighted the importance of being a member of an industry association. At the start of this crisis, following advocating on behalf of CMPA members, the Victorian Government confirmed that “quarries can continue to operate and deliver resources at this time across Victoria, regardless of postcode, providing that they comply with the requirements of the Chief Health Officer’s directions and guidance from DHHS regarding physical distancing and hygiene”.
The CMPA is recognised by it’s members as the principal advocate for the Construction Material Processors Industry in Victoria.
Evolving from industry pressure for a peer network of independent quarrying companies the CMPA provides strong representation and advocacy in the best interests of its Members. In so doing, the CMPA will support the operating viability and foster the long-term sustainability of Members businesses and more generally, the construction materials industry in Victoria.
The CMPA is overseen by an elected Management Committee as well as an Associate Committee which is guided by the CMPA Statement of Purpose.
The purpose of CMPA is to ensure the continued presence of a viable broad spectrum of businesses that extract and process hard rock, gravel, sand, clay, lime, and soil. CMPA members also operate recycling businesses. CMPA members are typically small to medium sized family and private businesses; local government; and utilities within Victoria.
As a representative organisation, the CMPA is now regularly called upon to provide comment, submissions and direct assistance to members, government, regulatory bodies, industry and the wider community. We rely on our membership to ensure the continuation of these goals and endeavours, and to enable us to continue to represent all industry participants, regardless of size or status.
Without the CMPA and the intensive lobbying conducted on behalf of members, industry would be facing higher costs and burdens on their bottom line with little recognition by Government of the essential service provided by Members that support Victoria’s economic growth.
The CMPA would not be able to prosper and grow without the Associate members, who also play an important role in supporting extractive industry businesses in Victoria and the economy. In 2018/19 in Victoria, the sector supplied 63 million tonnes of construction materials to the market, at a value of approximately $1.1 billion. Small to medium quarries account for approximately half of this production.
However, there are current challenges from the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on the construction industry, but Victoria’s economy is forecast to grow more than any other State.
“A new research report released by Deloitte Access Economics has confirmed what we already believed – Victoria is the greatest place for businesses to be in Australia in 2021.”
Deloitte Access Economics’ latest Business Outlook report predicts Victoria’s economy to grow by 5.3 per cent this calendar year.
The quarterly report, which was release on Monday (18 January 2021), details the ‘V-shaped’ decline and subsequent recovery of Victoria after having been the most severely affected from COVID-19 outbreaks, lockdowns, and restrictions.
Deloitte Access Economics’ partner Chris Richardson told The Age “overall, Victoria’s recovery to date has been remarkable.” “Few at the height of the second wave could have envisaged Victoria would begin 2021 in such a favorable position.
Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas also celebrated the positive outlook: “jobs will remain front and center in our recovery plans as we continue to invest in employment support across Victoria, together with our record pipeline of infrastructure projects.”
