By on July 3, 2002

General Meeting # 11

Members are invited to attend CMPA General Meeting #11 to be held on the 29th November at the Tullamarine Motor Inn.

After the success and popularity of the AGM it is hoped that members can again provide similar support.

The key presentation will be by Chief Inspector of Quarries, Mr John Mitas.  He intends to detail the compulsory requirement for updating and renewal of Blasting and Explosive licenses.

The Industry representative of the Mining & Quarrying Occupational Health and Safety Committee will be in attendance to inform members of the potential problems associated with Silicosis from Quarrying operations.

Meeting Sponsors Metso Minerals and Polo Citrus Australia will provide brief presentation on their products.

Pending Members approval, a portion of the money taken at the AGM will go toward the Farm Hand appeal for  drought relief.

Attendance is required to ensure that all members are satisfied with the decision to be made on Rehabilitation Bonds.

Please RSVP the CMPA by 15th November 2002 to confirm your attendance.

NEWSLETTER GETS OVERHAUL

As part of the evolution of the CMPA, the now quarterly members’ newsletter will switch to a monthly format from February 2003.

The new service will bring members up-to-date with issues on a more regular basis and will ensure the timeliness of news and information in the newsletter. The monthly format will provide the opportunity to report in a more in-depth and timely manner on issues that impact on the broader membership and ensure that a more regular deadline is established to ease participation by interested parties.

The monthly newsletter will be distributed 10 months of the year and forms part of a marketing push to attract a new range of members to the association and speed up the chain of general membership communications.

The final stage of the 2002-03 membership drive has commenced. This drive will be aimed at operators and associates known to the CMPA who are currently not members. The CMPA has enjoyed considerable success in its first years of existence and is keen to ensure that its impact is not diminished in years to come. Members are again advised to bring issues and ideas to the management committees attention to ensure relevant and timely response.

CMPA Launches Tailor made Manual for Members

A General Information Reference Manual has recently been launched by the CMPA. The second major publication produced by the CMPA, the manual was initiated in response to issues raised by members over the past 12 months.

More than 160 pages of helpful information will provide members with a handy and easy to use reference.  It will provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding all aspects of the operation of the CMPA and various commonly shared business and operation issues.

Topics covered include CMPA meeting dates, the CMPA rule, an Associate Members’ listing, legal advice, business support literature, Industrial Award information and Guidelines for Development of Work Plans which was provided by the Department of Natural Resources.

A detailed full page is devoted to each of the Associate Members to help promote their business and support their commitment to the CMPA.

All CMPA members will receive copies of this document as part of their annual membership. The success of this manual will be judged over time, but the reference is expected to be updated annually to correspond to changing member needs.

More than 350 copies of the various publications produced by the CMPA have been sold to date including the Mobile Plant Operators’ Daily Safety Checklist; Employee Wage Books; Safety Maintenance, Environment and Material Concern Forms, and the Work Safely Reference Manual.

The CMPA is confident the manual will be well received by members and others and reflects a commitment to continuous improvement within the industry.

CHECK IS IN THE MAIL

RSM Bird Cameron Partners have recently completed their audit of CMPA financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2002.

The independent audit has reported that all financial affairs are in order. The most notable entry was the considerable increase in cash assets in the journals reflecting the WELL funding grant of $90,000 received for Work Safely training programs undertaken by the CMPA.

A copy of the financial statements will be mailed to all members shortly.

Brain Teaser:

Picture a ship at anchor, over the side hangs a rope ladder with half metre rungs.  The tide rises a half metre per hour. At the end of five hours, how much of the ladder will remain above water assuming that nine rungs were above the water when the tide began to rise?

Answer at the bottom of the page.

Thought for the month

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

CMPA CALLS FOR SUPPORT

The CMPA is continually on the hunt for good (or bad) news for publishing in the CMPA News.

Have you attended the Work Safely Training, installed a new piece of plant, bought some new equipment, been dissatisfied with your local politician?  We want to know.

We are after stories, and information that is relevant to the CMPA and the industry.  If you have a comment to make on CMPA work, have an issue to raise or think you might have something to offer, type it up and send it into the CMPA as soon as possible.

To all New Members you are more than welcome to have a say.  If there is an issue that you feel merits inclusion we’d love to hear about it!

ANSWER BLUNDER

People should take note that the answer to the Brain Teaser in the last edition of CMPA News was wrong!  This is no fault of the provider nor the editor but a mistake by a third party who shall not be named (The CMPA Document Officer).  The correct solution to the riddle according to Mr Robert Parker is not “himself”, but “his Son.”  This weeks solution is at the bottom of this page.

Brain Teaser Solution: 9 rungs will still be above the water. As the tide rises, so too will the ship and the ladder.
