FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF WORKSAFE ADMINISTERING OHS FOR QUARRIES

By on January 25, 2009

It’s hard to believe, but it has been a year since WorkSafe began administering OHS for Victoria’s quarries. During this time, WorkSafe has made more than 225 visits to quarries and attended several information sessions with the CMPA and other industry associations.

Mick Cayless, an inspector with almost 30 years experience working with explosives and quarries, says that he has been very impressed with the quarry operators he has met. Most have been very cooperative and happy to have a new set of eyes look over their sites and suggest some improvements.

He has also been impressed with how quickly the operators have addressed his concerns – oft en the same day!

Generally the sites have provided good site and first aid facilities as well as good systems of work and training for their employees and contractors.

The most common problems found on quarry sites include:

  • Guarding equipment such as conveyors, crushers, pedestal grinders and pillar drills
  • The interaction of people and mobile plant (eg. Trucks) on their sites
  • Storage of hazardous substances, guarding of equipment (especially in workshops) and housekeeping

WorkSafe will continue working with the CMPA to provide specific safety solutions and updates.
