TERRY HICKEY, Managing Director for Gordyn & Palmer looks at how they can increase the performance of all industrial plants with innovative industrial automation systems, electrical installations and electrical engineering

LAURENS GORDYN & Neville Palmer met at night school in the mid 1970’s. The two found an ideal mix in their abilities and joined strengths to establish Gordyn & Palmer in Dandenong in 1978. Pioneer was the first of the big players to give the fledgling company an opportunity with the relocation of an asphalt plant to Westall. The pair worked morning, noon and night with wives ferrying meals out to the site.

Gordyn & Palmer offered “25 Hour a Day Service” for their quarry and sand plant customers. Well before the mobile phone era this service relied on pagers and Hiace ashtrays full of loose change for pay phones.

In 1989 the company relocated to a purpose built facility in Hallam, Victoria to meet the growing demands of their services and their ever-increasing list of customers.

“We grew via recommendation, there was never any marketing. Somehow the phone always rang. We started in a period when Pioneer and the Readymix Group were going through an extremely high demand and expansion phase.” says Neville. “This created great opportunities for Gordyn & Palmer, particularly with our expertise in motor control and energy management.”

Gordyn & Palmer became widely recognised for its plant automation upgrades from manual plants to fully automated batch systems.

Long lasting, strong relationships were formed within the major industry companies, including Ron Kerr, validating the company commitment to the quarrying industry.

The servicing of the then Pioneer, Readymix and Boral plants in the Melbourne metropolitan area led to a demand for services in rural and interstate regions. The experience gained in this domestic market then took the company overseas to countries such as Chile, China, Philippines and U.S.A.

“Our expertise has had to change with the demands of our customers, particularly with what companies such as Alex Fraser need to achieve environmentally”, notes Neville.

Today Gordyn & Palmer are at the forefront of distribution, industrial automation systems and services and are well known, trusted and respected in Australia and overseas.

Gordyn & Palmer’s Managing Director, Terry Hickey is part of the second generation of directors. “Our continued success is due to our innovation, specialisation and the adaptation of new technologies with high quality products provided to a wide range of clients and industries”.

Terry, along with Automation Systems Manager George Boloutis is a key driver of the 60 highly skilled personnel and the development, implementation and service of the full array of Gordyn & Palmer automation products.

“You can expect to receive great communication from us, as we understand the importance of developing a strong relationship with each of our customers. We have a highly skilled and well trained team of professionals who work as a cohesive team, ensuring the high quality standards are met in every contract and at all stages of the project”.

Gordyn & Palmer’s product range includes their in house developed Genius Batching systems, Plant Control systems and Global Monitoring systems. They also supply custom sheet metal fabrication, custom switchboards, engineering and ongoing service and maintenance services.

“With over 35 years of full electrical fit outs, fault finding and automating plant equipment we have advanced intellectual capital which puts us in front and stands us out from the local and overseas competition”.

“Gordyn & Palmer were awarded the Electrical Engineering & Switchboards and PLC & SCADA tenders for our new rock crushing plant in Wyndham Vale.

This encompassed the plants electrical design, switchboard design and manufacture, and software design. Gordyn & Palmer also undertook the high voltage design and management required to supply the plants electrical demand.

Gordyn & Palmer were selected based on quarry industry experience and reputation, as well as relationships developed during initial plant concept discussions.

The project has confirmed our trust in Gordyn & Palmer’s ability to deliver a complete package. Gordyn & Palmer have provided the customer service that is necessary to be successful in a project of this size”
