Brain Teaser

Sherlock Holmes sat opposite Inspector Lestrade in Lestrade’s office at Scotland Yard. A Sergeant entered with 3 prisoners, who stood in line in front of the desk.

Holmes watched as Lestrade interrogated the 3 men. Barnett stood between the man who was clean-shaven and the man who stole the cigar case.

Black, who had stolen the wallet, had been arrested at the same time as Wetherby. It was the man with the mustache, not the one with the beard, who had stolen the watch.

Can you identify the men, matching them to the item stolen and whether he was clean-shaven or had a moustache or a beard?

Solution at the bottom of the page.

Progress Report—CMPA Development Manager—Adrian Town

Adrian Town conducted his first formal site visits as Development Manager in the Western Region in mid February.

Warrack Concrete—Past Member
Garry Streeter operated a concrete, packing sand and loam pit on private property near Warracknabeal for 27 years, but due to limitations put on the deposit 6 years ago by the local Aboriginal community, has since closed the operation.

The deposit had been registered as an Aboriginal site in 1920 unbeknown to the landowner or Mr Streeter. Nothing turned up in an archaeological dig, however the area was not to be disturbed. Mr Streeter was able to continue extracting concrete sand from the site until a second archaeological dig was requested and he decided to purchase his sand elsewhere rather than cover further such costs.

Millers Civil Contractors & Plant Hire—Non Member
I spoke to Jason Miller on the phone. They have a gypsum pit and he is interested in upgrading his mining qualifications to the extractive industry requirements. Follow up discussions are to occur.

Aitkens Scotsleigh Gypsum – Member
Roger Aitken runs a number of Gypsum pits, he processes his material with a Pegson track mounted impactor plant and a power screen. In the off-season he contracts crushers. The operation is very well run. Mr Aitken is an enthusiastic Member and eagerly showed me around his Gypsum pit.

McKenzie Creek Quarry – Member
Prior to leaving the region I visited Peter Langlands at his house to bring him up to date on my visit into the region for which he is currently Regional Coordinator. We then travelled out to McKenzie Creek Quarry and visited his operation and inspected the plant and pit.

Stawell Brick Company – Member
Managing Director John Collins is a strong believer in the CMPA. His company operators clay pits in the Stawell area to provide raw material for their Brick plant. Within the brick plant they run an impact crusher to produce grog material used in the brick manufacturing process, the plant is fully automated with the exception of the sorting line.

Stawell Quarry, Conundrum Holdings – Member
Quarry Manager Brian Calovic conduced a full site tour of the tidy and well-maintained plant. The plant is fully automated to improve production and reduce manual operations within the plant. Wherever possible OH&S considerations have been implemented, adding benefit and improving efficiency with reduction in down time in maintaining plant.

Starick’s Gypsum – Non Member (have since joined)
The Starick’s operation is a Gypsum pit situated on their farming property. Garry was running the pit when I visited. Operations consist of two loaders and a mobile screen. They also have a locally made Gypsum crusher that can be hooked into the power-screening unit. Discussions were held regarding the benefits of the CMPA. Starick’s Gypsum have since joined and we welcome them to the CMPA.
