VLPA Update (Issue 41)

By on October 25, 2008

The Victorian Limestone Producers Association has had a busy couple of months with the AGM and annual conference being held in Geelong as reported by PETER MCCLUSKY, VLPA Business Manager.

AGM & CONFERENCE

The Victorian Limestone Producers Association held its AGM and conference recently in Geelong at which the Committee for 2008/09 were elected. Tom McCann of Geelong Lime continues as Chairman.

The other Committee Members are Trevor Tovey (Treasurer), Murray Joseph (Secretary), Gary Bascomb, Noel Letcher (Technical Member) and Graham Heywood. Peter McCluskey continues as Business Manager.

We are grateful to Komatsu Australia through Bob Jones and Loadrite & Galesafe Weighing through the Gale family for sponsoring the AGM and conference.

Some very informative speakers addressed the conference including Sarah Andrew from CMPA who provided a comprehensive synopsis of CMPA’s position regarding the likely merger of the extractives and minerals Acts.

DeAnne Price from DPI’s Climate Watch at Horsham provided an outlook for Victoria’s weather. She indicated a La Nina conditions were currently evident (greater rainfall likelihood than not) but it was likely to not result in anything greater than average rainfall.

Naomi Oosting from DPI Minerals and Petroleum Regulation outlined the new bond calculator and how operators could use it.

EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES ACT MERGER

Along with other industry Associations we are taking a keen interest in this process as a member of the Extractive Industries Workshop chaired by DPI and have made a submission indicating the proposed merger with the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act would increase red tape.

The likely requirement for ongoing community consultation for new and changed Work Authorities is a concern and we along with other industry bodies are seeking to have a realistic approach to this matter.

NATIVE VEGETATION FRAMEWORK REVIEW

Th e Victorian Limestone Producers Association is represented along with other mining and farming Associations on the Government/industry working party reviewing the framework. Industry concerns are being fed into the process and hopefully positive outcomes for industry will result. Members with concerns on this issue should contact Peter McCluskey to discuss them.

Peter McCluskey 0408 496 588 will be happy to provide further information on any of the above items or visit www.vlpa.asn.au
